An Islamic cultural centre close to the site where New York's World Trade Center once stood has opened quietly in spite of scenes last year of vehement protests from those who said the area should not house a mosque.

The opening ceremony for the Park51 centre on Wednesday featured a photo exhibit called "NYChildren", displaying over 160 portraits of immigrant children living in New York.

Sharif El-Gamal, the center's developer, said the biggest error on the project was not involving the families of 9/11 victims from the start.

"We made incredible mistakes," El-Gamal told The Associated Press in an earlier interview at his Manhattan office.

The building at 51 Park Place, two blocks from the World Trade Center site, includes a Muslim prayer space that has been open for two years.

The article continues on the site about what's offered there and Terry Jones threatening to burn Qurans.

While it may be only a few blocks away from ground zero, this cultural center is actually pretty much tucked out of sight. It's kind of embedded in the block and it's not like there are neon signs for the place. They have every right to be there. I don't want anyone treading on my religious freedom, and while I might not agree with their religion, I have no right to take it away from them.

It's not in a prominent location. And I'm and completely convinced that Terry Jones is a dangerous man at this point. Whether he realizes it or not, he's put a lot of lives in danger, including those of American military overseas.

They didn't make a big deal out of it... the American media did... namely Fox news...

Yes the Muslim community center that was already there has finished their renovations... and the actual mosque that is even closer to ground zero continues along without disruption or objection.

(Also, Fox News was not the only outlet to make a big deal out of this).

I mean... lets be serious. This is what people were so angry about.

This is the artist's rendition of what Park51, erroneously called ground zero mosque. Other than looking really out of place, I don't think anyone would mistake this for a mosque. In fact... the community center's religious chapel is intended to be multi-faith, even though it is expected to be primarily for Muslim use. This place will include a 500-seat auditorium, theater, a performing arts center, a fitness center, a swimming pool, a basketball court, a childcare area, a bookstore, a culinary school, an art studio, a food court, and a memorial to the victims of the September 11 attacks...

If this is in any way intended to be offensive to 9/11 victims... I don't see it.
(Also, Fox News was not the only outlet to make a big deal out of this).
I wrote the "American Media"... So we agree.

Islam is incapable of action. Individuals who identified themselves as Muslim did this act. The majority of Muslims do not commit terrorism. The mosque might well be a plot, but tough poo, this is the US and they can build wherever they want. It's not against the law to be the object of suspicion.

Something that I noticed wasn't in this article, or any during the debate that I read. A mosque was destroyed on 9/11 on the 17th floor of the WTC.

Does anyone else notice something fishy about that mockup? Namely that there are a number of stars of David that appear? Seems odd, given the relationship that Jews and Muslims have...

What is striking to me is the resounding lack for condemnation for terrorist acts. By failing to condemn these terrorist actions they are in fact condoning terrorist acts. I have a problem with that.

And you obtain this information from what sources?
We cannot view people as aggregates. I reject Mohammedanism, but that is an idea, not a person.

The really wild part about this is... the Terrorists don't see the community center as a supporter of their work, but they see the bigoted opposition to it as the perfect recruiting tool. Read more about it here. "By preventing this mosque from being built, America is doing us a big favor," the Taliban operative stated. "It’s providing us with more recruits, donations, and popular support."

This is why I wrote earlier and before this is one of the biggest non-issues being blown out of proportion by the American media (namely fox news) that is in fact supporting terrorism... not the Muslim community center... Imagine that.
