Antigonos
Okay, google image brings up all sorts of things when I type 'matraque' none of which are remotely what we are looking for! This is an old football rattle, so not the same but close enough to give an idea
I have got to laugh a little because I have several of these, in plastic, that my kids used, in the house somewhere. At the holiday of Purim, when the Book of Esther is read in the synagogue, it is traditional to make noise whenever the name of Haman the Amalekite is pronounced, because Jews are commanded to "destroy Amalek" in the Torah. This is what is called a "grogger" in Yiddish, or "ra'ashan" in Hebrew, and it is wielded with great zest whenever Haman's name comes up. First time I ever heard it referred to as a football rattle, and yes, it does make a tremendous rattle which would be very effective at getting anyone out of bed. faithcecelia
Did anyone notice that in their horarium they don't have a siesta scheduled for after lunch? all of the ones I have been in have had at least half an hour, some one hour. I don't know how they make it through the day without this rest time!!
NH don't have siesta either, and Q have it instead of midday recreation with most of the sisters using it to get out for walks, etc. It was a huge relief to know I wasn't forced to rest - the nights are too long for me as it is without sleeping it the daytime! At one Carmel, they just called it Silence and we could read or rest or do anything as long as it was done quietly and didn't disturb anyone who wanted to rest. I just loved the time alone. Clare~Therese
I don't know why but I seriously keep reading the title of this thread as "Brickhead Carmel." Weird. But anyway, the website is great and Carmelites are wonderful.
