Birkenhead Carmel - New Website

I was just browsing for pictures and came across Birkenhead's brand new website - previously, as far as I have ever been able to find, they just had a simple page on the main UK Carmelite website. It is simple but lovelyhttp://www.carmelitesbirkenhead.org.uk/index.html

What is Matraque at 0530? I have not heard of this term...

Its what they use as an alarm call. I will look for a picture, but the closest I can think to describe it is an old football rattle. Its an awful noise!!!

Okay, google image brings up all sorts of things when I type 'matraque' none of which are remotely what we are looking for! This is an old football rattle, so not the same but close enough to give an idea

Lovely pictures on the website but is there anywhere that shows images of a carmelite cell? I'm just wondering what I might be letting myself in for

At Quidenham the cells vary dramatically in size an shape as the building was converted quickly and cheaply. There they have 'normal' beds, almost all the standard 3' but a couple of the cells (most often used for aspirants) still have 2'6" as the cells are long and narrow. So basically, a normal bed with duvet, a locker, a desk and chair, a chest of drawers and a small bookshelf. Simple but adequate. At Notting Hill, as a built Carmel, they have the window seats and built-in bookshelf that St Teresa originally wanted

Chiara Francesco

I prefer the cell in the Kirk Edge Carmel: http://www.kirkedge.org.uk/gallery.html - scroll down about 3/4.

Do these nuns where the full traditional Carmelite habit? Are they 1990s or 1991s?

I wanted to post a pic that was the closest to what strictlyinkblot will experience.

Are you asking about Birkenhead? They are 1991, all English Carmels have the habit, most have modified their veils in one way or another, I am not sure about Birkenhead.

at first I thought this was the BirkenSTOCK Carmel.

Which (from the limited amount I've seen) would be most Carmels!

:P

I was reading it as Birkenstocks too! Which, by the way, I hear last a very very long time & would be appropos for monastery wear. :)

Did anyone notice that in their horarium they don't have a siesta scheduled for after lunch? all of the ones I have been in have had at least half an hour, some one hour. I don't know how they make it through the day without this rest time!!

I've always heard it referred to as a clapper :proud: Here it is in one of Brandee's videos
