Sadly Ardil, you just made me think of an uncle of mine. He tried to buy a sniper rifle, just to say that A) He owned one and B) that he had seen what it did to a deer.

I could set some land mines I suppose. But I may go for laying chicken wire on the ground around the roses and an electric fence around the fruit trees. I seriously doubt that they would try and jump it at night.

They will indeed jump the fence.

My sister had a high fence around her garden to keep the deer out. One summer's morning she got dressed, kissed her husband goodbye as he was going in to shave, and left the house. The next sound he heard was a gunshot. He went tearing outside half shaved & half soapy, and there she stood in her business suit & high heels, just taking the rifle down from her shoulder. She explained that a deer was eating her zucchini! He asked her if she got the deer. She said, "No, but I took my shot."

Don't rely on the fence alone.

Also, you can purchase bottles of coyote urine at hardware stores. This can be used to mark the trees, perimeter, etc. to deter deer. As to whether or not it works, that will depend upon how easily your deer are intimidated by coyotes.

This is sometimes referred to as a 'liquid fence.'

I would recommend being careful with it, though. You don't want to spill that stuff in your house!

Human hair clippings can be tied into little sachets from old pantyhose and then tied to the tree. I'm guessing that's not something you'd have on hand, but hey, it's supposed to work.

I completely agree with the huntin' solutions, but they aren't always viable, especially in city-like areas. As people said before, human hair clippin's tied up like MithLuin suggested work. me cousin owns an orchard surrounded by woods that have lots of deer and aarrr since he can't hunt them to extinction, he puts up hair clippin's and aarrr used dryer sheets. After a couple of loads in the dryer with your other clothes just tie it to or use a clothespin to attach it to your plants.

I agree with the hair. I never thought it be true, until I asked me parents after I watched the Rookie. Turns out, it tis!

It's ironic that you posted this yesterday, as there happened to be an article in the Chicago Tribune Sunday section on this topic. I can't find an online version of it, however.

I have heard that there is some combination of urine, tobacco juice, and dish liquid that is supposed to keep some animals away from plants.
