southern california guy
I originally thought that the things chewing on my fruit trees were squirrels -- and perhaps they were -- but cages around the trees with a ring of electric wire around them only stopped the damage for a little bit.. They started chewing on the trees above the cages, and they even started eating my roses and chewing on the tops of the plants. Now my poor roses are a mess. I haven't seen deer but I have found a few tracks and I've definitely got deer coming and chewing on things at night. I'm going to put an electric fence around the fruit trees and I've heard that they don't like to walk on chicken wire so I'm going to put chicken wire down around the roses. Other than tall fences which can be costly are there other good ways to control them? Edited September 18, 2011 by southern california guy
ardillacid
A good hunting rifle. Deer meat is delicious if prepared right
Basilisa Marie
Human hair! Put hair clippings around your garden and around your plants. I've also heard things like putting up a fishing line fence, because the deer can't see it and run into it and get scared.
BG45
Seconding any idea with fences, it's the only way my aunt's garden ever survives the deer that roam the city.

Amppax
I second all things related to guns, and add bow and arrow to the list, for my more traditionally minded friends.
Sister Marie
The human hair thing is true! They won't go near it if you have human hair there. They also hate marigolds and blue Hawaiians... plant those around as a perimeter.
