Ef Mass

I loved my six months attending EF Mass in Melbourne because of the 'hermit like' nature of it. It isn't offered out here in the bush country but my priest is sweet and the parish community loving and supportive, so God is still in this place! :)

When I first read the title I thought it was meant as swearing at the thought of mass (abbreviating the f-bomb). It angered me until I read more posts :P

I think I'd want a friend to go with me to my first ef mass, so I don't feel too out of place >_>

And we used to just call it the 'Latin Mass' here in Melbourne!

Explain the syllable stress of Quenya?
Not a philologist, matey, sorry. I think it's the second to last most of the time, but it's not that simple.

Ardalambion is a great source for any questions on Tolkien's languages. HERE is a brief comment on pronunciation.
The Elf Gildor referred to Quenya as "the Ancient Tongue" (LotR1/I ch. 3), Bein' the most prestigious language in the world, it is also called "the High Speech of the West", "the high Eldarin tongue" (Silm. ch. 15, Akallabêth) or "High Ancient Elven" (WR:160). By the Númenóreans, Quenya be called Nimriyê or "Nimrian tongue", as the Dúnedain called the Elves Nimîr, the Beautiful. (SD:414, cf. WJ:386). Later, Frodo referred to Quenya as "the ancient tongue of the Elves beyond the Sea" or "the language...of Elven-song". (LotR1/II ch. 8) In English, Tolkien also used designations like "High-elven" (occasionally in Letters: "High-elvish") also "Elf-Latin, Elven-Latin" (Letters p. 176). In Middle-earth, Quenya eventually became a language of ceremony a.n.d lore, so Tolkien deemed it comparable to Latin in Europe.
But if ya want to know how the language should be pronounced, it's best to go to the source:

Here's how the Pater Noster should sound:

As for an elf mass....would that be in elf-latin (ie, Quenya)?

Because if so, I would soooooo go! It's a beautiful language; it sounds like Finnish.

Here's the Lord's Prayer in Quenya:

See, I can already say 'Amen' so we're good to go! :)

Readin's would have to be limited, though. So far, the only parts of the Bible that have been translated are: the first two chapters of Genesis, Luke 2, the first 5 chapters of Matthew, and aarrr aarrr everythin' by John. No, really: http://folk.uib.no/hnohf/ Scroll down to 'Post-Tolkien Quenya Compositions'
So I just saw that me old parish in JAX now has an EF Mass twice a month. Methinks I'll have to check it out, since I've yet to attend an EF Mass.

God the Father

I read the title of this thread as an angry "Eff mass!" and got psyched up to ask the OP if they wanted to go skateboardin' and spraypaint some train cars.

amesome!

I've probably been more times than most others on this forum, but I haven't been in over a year.

It's better when it's done by a parish that is normally Ordinary Form. That way, you don't have to deal with the people who attend the EF normally (who can, out of zeal, put on too much pressure and can make the entire experience far more intimidating than it needs to be).

The pastor there confirmed me, he's a great Irish priest. I'd never thought of him as all that traditional in that sense (totally orthodox, but the parish itself was/is more "contemporary" music-wise), so I was pleasantly surprised.

I know, right? :P I had my brother convinced of that when he was, like, 5. Then he grew up. :( He's 21 now, and he loves me, but has known for a very, very long time that his big sister is not razzle dazzle. Tolkien's work is one of my passions, so I know entirely too much about it (though I am not a language expert, by any means).

Quenya can be used for anything, so it doesn't always sound 'pretty', but I think it would make a great liturgical language. I once translated the baptismal formula into Quenya....you know, just in case I met any elves who wanted to become Catholic ;).

You just have to ignore stuff like this....
