Phirst Day Of Catechism Class

So..
Today was my first day back as the 7th grade catechist. There are 27 kids in my class, and that is rather large for us. Last year I had 16. But a positive is that I actually teach in a classroom, not in the Bible Study meeting room. LOL

Really good kids, with lots of questions and surprisingly awake for 9am on a Sunday. ha!

Anywho...we were talking about the Trinity and i broke out with a picture

and then spoke about the Nicene Creed, and how it talks about each person of the Trinity. I gave them what will be the 'new' or 'revised' translation. They had NO IDEA about the changes that are coming. NONE..WHAT.SO.EVER. It has been in our bulletin for a few months now, and we are even singing the 'new' Gloria, but they had no idea. So I explained about translations from Latin, and I got a blank stare. LOL I explained to them that up till 40 or so years ago, the whole Mass was in Latin.

and there was this one girl....who said...

"Well why didn't they just keep it in latin? Wouldn't that just make more sense? That way everyone knows the same thing!"

and then, I thought of phatmass.

LOL.

anyways, I thought I would share that!

I"m teaching 4th grade, and there is supposed to be 20 but only 11 showed up today. They are all eager to learn, and I taught about the Trinity today too!!! I kept emphasizing how God is a mystery, and no man can ever truly explain the Trinity fully, because the Trinity is a mystery.

...then one little boy rose his hand and said, "I think I can explain the mystery!" And he went on to draw a triangle and say, "see, one triangle, 3 points!" And he was soo proud of himself... it was cute!!!

I was also very happy to see that all my kiddos were with their families at Mass immediately following the class. Its going to be a great year!!

I'm amazed at how many people do Religious Ed on Sunday. Where I grew up and where I used to live, it was always on Wednesdays. But here, they do it on Sundays, too.

My 5th graders have the problem of wanting to should out the answers. :nono: I try to explain to them there's a class of adults on the other side of the wall, but they don't seem to understand. :wall: We are the only class with an actual room, even if it isn't a classroom. We had to move the old PSR building in order to make way for the new (and much bigger) one.
I have the feeling this is going to be a long year. We have 17 enrolled and are able to fit the 10 there today around one table and then pushed another against the wall so I had room to move around and help them. I hate to think about what will happen when everyone is there!

yes..heaven forbid you drive to church more than once a week!!

The parking lots are a mess on Sundays when there are classes.

I wonder if it would improve or worsen attendance. I mean, if the kids are going to be out of town for the weekend, they will miss class, even if the families still do go to Mass wherever they are. But then, I'm sure during the week, sporting events and the like are sure to be more important than religion classes for a good many people during the week.
