that's a good idea about a hot sweet drink. I could have hot chocolate or my chai. Perfect. I'll report back on how it went when I'm done

normally afterwards, they have treats for you.. like grape juice and fig newtons...

That's like my favorite part of the whole thing. I love grape juice.

I've never donated but I should probably try now that I weigh enough and I'm not pregnant or nursing. I highly support this practice especially since I know and am related to people who rely on the generosity of others who donate for serious health issues (blood disorders in particular).

I give fairly consistency. Now that there's a donation center about ten minutes from my new job, I plan to give every six weeks. About two more weeks until I give again.

If I go too long without giving, the vampires start calling. I have O- blood, so it's always in demand.

Are you allowed to give that often over there? Here it has to be 16weeks between donations.

I'm O- too so get reminder letters very quickly if I miss for any reason. I also have high iron levels which they like too - I remember the look on the woman's face when I had told her I was vegan and then she saw quite how heavy my blood was, I think at least a few of her preconceptions went out of the window that day!

Here it's eight weeks for whole blood, twelve (I think) for platelets.

I think it is eight weeks between whole blood donations - no more than five times in a year. But for platelets, I was giving every two weeks over the summer - and I think I could have given every week!

One more question, once the needle is actually in my arm, how long does it generally take for a whole pint to come out?

They usually say an hour or so for the whole process, less if its not your first time, but only 20mins or so for the donation usually - it can vary though person to person, how warm or cold it is (usually faster when warm) etc.

It depends on the person! For example, It takes me a long time (I have low iron)--about half hour or so. My father, the carnivore, only needs around ten minutes. So it totally depends! Eat lots of spinach and iron rich food, and it'll be faster.

After the needle's in me, it typically only takes about 7-10 minutes for the blood to come out. Just for fun, sometimes I keep track of how long it takes- it gives me something to think about. One time it took 5:05 for me to give a pint and they were like "whoa". Interestingly enough, my iron is super low. But for some reason I basically leak blood, so the whole process for me is less than a half-hour. Just relax and take your time, there's no rush and they have very comfy chairs :)

It can vary. Usually, more hydrated = less time. Make sure you drink a good amount of fluids (like milk or juice) in the morning.
