cappie
Latin is important especially to the Church because it is unchanging. The same words have the same meanings that they did 100's of years ago & the same meanings that they will have 100's of years from now. Most fitting to have unchanging words to describe and define unchanging truths. The name of the language, Latin, indeed derives from Latium, now known as "Lazio", a central region of Italy, whose own etymology is in doubt. Some classicists consider the word comes from the Latin verb "latere", meaning "the place of concealment" because according to Roman poet Ovid, here Saturnus lay concealed from his son. Others consider that "Latium" is connected with the Latin word "liber", meaning "free", so Latium may be "the land of the free". it became the language of the Roman Empire and gradually became the language of the Church, although Greek was the liturgical and scriptural language.
