The "arfink Is A Geek" Thread.

So, I figured if BG45 got to have a thread to ramble in I could have one too. And then people who wish to be spared my geeky rambling may avoid it.

Today's geeky ramble:

Plasma weaponry? I thought about how one might do it. Instead of trying to make a plasma projectile like in all the movies, how about using plasma to fling a more ordinary projectile?

Turns out hobbyists are already doing just that. In a rail-gun electrical current is applied between two conductive rails with a conductive projectile between them. The flowing current induces a magnetic field known as an "eddy current" which repels the projectile down the rails at extremely high speeds. Ideally anyways. Hobby rail-gun builders have discovered that a poorly built rail-gun vaporises the "armiture" instead of pushing it down the rails. The resulting hot plasma usually comes out the end of the barrel along with an impressive spray of sparks (leftover bits of molten metal that didn't get vaporised.)

Most hobbyists try to avoid plasma-shots as they are called, since although the plasma itself can rapidly accelerate a projectile it's not the goal of the project. So I thought, what if you intentionally produced alot of plasma with a spark gap and used the resulting hot gases to move the projectile?

That's about as far as I thought about it. Except to think that vaporising metal to propel a bullet is hardly energy or cost efficient. But cool.

That is all for today's geeky ramble. You may continue on your way.

All in favor of arfink needing a tee shirt saying:

I'll design one. Just as soon as I get my Wacom tablet working again.

OK, last post was the "Geek Ramble of the Day."
So that would make this post the "Geek Ramble of the Day- Side-Track #1."

Henceforth abbreviated GRoD and GRoD-ST#xx.

I am also a total food geek. Tonight I am making my popular focaccia-crust deep dish pizza. I begin by making a simple focaccia dough from scratch, with water, flour, salt, herbs, and olive oil. I prefer the extra-extra lite tasting virgin made by Bertolli BTW, as the stronger olive taste in other extra-virgin oils does not work well for the crust IMO.

Then this dough is placed in (but not pressed into) a 9x13 cake pan which has had 2 tablespoons of canola oil poured in the bottom. It is allowed to rise for one hour, then pressed to fit the bottom of the pan and climb all the way up the sides. Oil gets splashed all over the dough during this process, which is good. I then let it rise again for one additional hour before putting it into the oven at 375 degrees F for 18 minutes to pre-cook the crust. Then I pile the resulting rectangular focaccia bowls with layer upon layer of sauce, toppings, cheeze, etc. And put it back in the oven for another 15 minutes.

I am making this pizza RIGHT NOW.

Pics shall be taken of the finished product. Which will emerge from the oven momentarily. :)

I don't have pics of the process sadly, I didn't know I needed them.

It's extra super amazingly deep. 2 inches deep on average, some areas deeper..

Many times my cooking looks like the above. Sometimes though I just do this:
