Who gives a poo wht the critics say.

You are right- what other people say shouldn't matter. But if you'll allow me to play the devil's advocate for a few minutes. There are some things, like the sedia, which won't really make or break the Church in the long haul. It's important to give him honor and respect, and that clearly showed that he was worthy of even greater love than kings, back when royalty also rode in litters. But in today's society, it's not really necessary- and might even be off-putting to those that are learning about the Church.

For instance, when Pope Benedict started wearing his super cute red shoes, there was a rumor that they were Prada. Even though it's been clearly stated that they are made by his personal cobbler, some people still now associate his shoes with being lavish. It's his personal preference to return to this wonderful tradition of past popes. Moreover, shoes (which are worn by the majority of society), are a lot less noticeable than a throne/chair carried on people's shoulders (which is basically unheard of today).

Sorry this has gotten off topic! We can go back to the Popemobile concept, which is an excellent question!

To me it's an issue of practicality. Back in the day you had to get pretty close to someone to kill them, not you just have to squeeze a trigger and hit the right spot. It's a lot easier to attack from further away. St. Peter would not have had this concern of being pegged off by some loony with a gun, but different opportunities to kill him existed. Plus, love the guy, but he was crazy ;)
In this light, it almost seems kind of (and I hesitate to use this word) cowardly for our modern popes to use the popemobile.
I think it would be crazy not too. I'm engaging in a little bit of hyperbole here- I doubt I would actually infer insanity from lack of precautions. But I do generally think it's unwise for anyone to gamble with their life when they have the option of protecting it.
Generally not Catholics- not directly, at least. But they can have an effect on people who may or may not seriously consider Catholicism, so indirectly, you care about that.

It was the sedia gestatoria. (reference Wikipedia) The Popemobile raises him up to be able to be seen by the faithful without making him look arrogant in the eyes of critics.

There are many other chances for him to be martyred if that was to happen. In JPII's pontificate, there were several international trips that he was strongly encouraged to wear a bulletproof vest; many times he refused, saying that he should not live in fear.

That's the one!!! And yeah, I remember when Pope Benedict XVI went to Turkey the other year and there were all those threats on his life. It was truly humbling to watch him giving people Holy Communion in just his vestments despite all the threats.

Yes, Pope Benedict is not afraid to put down the windows of the popemobile as he drives around. I was just at World Youth Day, and I saw him waving to the crowd on the streets through open windows. True, he had security on foot surrounding the pope mobile, and there was likely security on the roofs of the buildings, but honestly...anyone could have been on that street.

I do not think the man is a coward at all, and I think the popemobile is designed to allow people to see him as he travels on parade.

So, why not?

Something tells me there is only so much the pope can say to get rid of security guards and such. Not that he needs to do so, but sometime I think people who love you and care about you will protect you even if you don't really want it. Like the Swiss Guards, they seem really committed to the pope personally, and would probably provide him protection even if he didn't ask for it.

Pontifite 7 of 10

I think the PopeMobil is more of a symbol, ya know? Something I as a Catholic can relate to. A Hot Wheel car especially for me and my people, ya know? And thats the only level i think of it on.
