Paul Simon singing Graceland. It's about a person (Simon himself, undoubtedly) going to Graceland after a divorce. The point is sort of, "If even Elvis couldn't keep his love croutons together, how are any of the rest of us supposed to?" Although Simon is Jewish, the song is full of Catholic imagery.

Graceland = heaven

Elvis = The King

Poor boys and pilgrims with families

"I've a reason to believe we all will be received in Graceland" - similar to "Come unto me all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

"I may be obliged to defend every love, every ending" - reminds one of the Judgment Day

The image this song always conjures up in my mind is of Elvis standing like a statue of the Sacred Heart (hearting burning & crowned with thorns) with his arms outstretched welcoming all the broken-hearted pilgrims, forgiving, healing the wounds, making everything alright.

I wonder if Simon had just divorced Carrie Fischer (nominally a Catholic) when he wrote this song.

I love Paul Simon more than I love many other things, but Graceland is one of his worst songs.
