missionseeker
My lease is up in about 45 days. I cannot (due to lots of things) stay where I am. I can also not afford to stay in this area. My old roommate (whom I love) has also been looking for a place ASAP. I do not have a car. She does. We both work in the same area. My boss told me that my schedule for next year would be 12-7 M-F. Hers is 10- 7 M-F. So we looked into housing about 20 mins away and $800 - $1000 cheaper. We are in the process of applying to live there. Yesterday my boss told me that actually my schedule would be 3pm-11pm and that I was getting the choice hours. So now I don't know that I would be able to live anywhere but here. But I can't afford to live here. I would need to come up with ~2500 off the bat. I don't have it. Which leaves me homeless in about 45 days. Also, I don't want to work on Friday nights. I spent my entire undergraduate career working late nights and weekends. I literally did not work for 3 Saturdays the entire time. And I always had to beg for the time off. And I just don't want to work them. I'm already really frustrated with my situation and my job. And now I am just very upset and feel lied to. And then I feel stupid for feeling upset. LaPetiteSoeur
It's not ridiculous at all for you to be upset. Prayers for the situation. Maybe you could talk to your boss and explain about the hours. Maybe he'll have a change of heart.
MissScripture
I don't think it's ridiculous. As someone who is sick of being jerked around by bosses (in my case, not even my own!) and understands the anxiety of not knowing what the heck is going on your life, I think it's totally understandable that you're upset. Is there any way you can tell your boss you prefer not the "choice" hours, since it's not YOUR "choice" hours? And if they're so great, they ought not have any trouble finding others to work them. Prayers, hun. It seems like it's just one thing after another for ya.
Maximilianus
What the ladies above me said. Try and talk to your boss, explain issues with your current living situations. If your boss has a heart he/she will understand why the new schedule is not "choice". ...easy for me to say, I know. missionseeker
I did, but all he said was that he can get me out by seven. But it sounded like I'd still be coming in at three. Which not even enough money to afford to live anywhere. lol.
MissScripture
Then why on earth did he ever tell you that you could have hours that were from 12-7?? Tell him you'll work the other hours if he will buy you a car. Haven't you worked here like, forever? Shouldn't you be getting some consideration?? Right now, jobs really frustrate me. And tell your boss you have a host of aspiring saints willing to fight for you! Maybe he'll be afraid we'll come and tell him what we think! Marie-Therese
Perhaps there should now be a "Get MT To Give 'Em A Right Hook" thread. Srsly, sorry honey. You need to tell this person straight up that either you get the hours you were initially promised, or you will be homeless. Say it just that plain. It is ridiculous to get someone to make living arrangements and transportation arrangements which are all they can manage, and then tell them that just won't work. I will ask St. Anthony to find you a solution, he usually helps me out big time.
missionseeker
thanks. And I did tell him would be homeless. I even almost cried. lol.
BG45
I think you're perfectly justified in being upset! And what did he say when you told him? You've got my continued prayers...

tinytherese
I agree with MissScripture's last post. Are there any other jobs you could do instead with an employeer who isn't a jerk? What did he say when you told him that would be homeless?
missionseeker
Well, I talked to him today. His answer is that he has two shifts that need to be covered. I can take one or I don't have a job. They are either 3pm - 11pm or All day Saturday and Sunday, Friday nights, and 2 more days a week. So much for "choice hours" and your choice. And "I don't want you leaving the cafe and biking home late at night". Honestly? I'm fed up at my job anyway. I've been there three years, never had a raise, am always on call, never get days off or paid vacation, am underpaid, the boss' family gets more hours than other employees. It looks like I have choice between joblessness and homelessness. And right now, joblessness isn't looking so bad. Maybe I can hold out until he fires me and I can at least collect unemployment. But they are hiring tutors and teachers' aides at the school about 5 mins from where I might live is, so I'm gonna apply for that. We'll see.
