Can A Catholic Bless Other People Or Things?

Hey everyone. Can a Catholic bless other people or things? If so, how do we do that? Do we just pray and ask God to bless them or do we say "I bless you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."? Thanks!

Brother Adam

We may always ask God's blessing for another person and should always bless others and refrain from cursing them. While we cannot give a priestly blessing (nor should we make the sign of the cross over others which denotes a priestly authority), there is an entire book of blessings for Catholic laity published by the USCCB for the Catholic home. I highly recommend it. I often formally close letters with blessings, and every Catholic should pray a blessing over his food before he eats. Parents should bless their children and catechists should bless their students. Some blessings are reserved to priests and other blessings reserved to bishops.

May God bless you and keep you.
