Countdown Thread For The New English Translation Of The Roman Missal

At my parish it has been really razzle dazzle. Our priests have taken the past month (or so) to review exactly what the Liturgy is and how we participate in it (going waaaaay back to the basics). The one homily I particularly remember was on sacred music. Now they are going over the actual translation and explaining where everything comes from in it. We are already using the Gloria and have nice cards with the new responses and such in the pews so I think this should be an easy transition. Well at least for those who attend regularly.

When, oh, when will the missals be available for us to purchase?!!!?!! Isn't that why they pushed it back a year in the first place, to give the publishers enough time to print the things?! Where are they, then?!?!!!

My friend has ordered me the everyday one (Sundays and weekdays in one) but its not promised until January. There are some Sunday ones about, and some that just cover this advent to next, but very little choice yet. And expensive too!

They should be available. they are for the priests, at least in our archdiocese, so I don't understand why they would not also be ready for the laity.

I hate to say it, but our parish is somewhat messed up (the only reason we go to our church is because we try to change the craziness and be a good example by dressing up, not chewing gum, acting reverent etc....) but our Priest (who isn't the "problem") has been saying after Mass the different changes to the Mass and why we are changing it. The parishioners are actually listening to him!






Well, somewhat listening to our Priest. I feel badly for him because it is so hard to be a Parish Priest, and to have most of your Parish know nothing about God. Yikes.

Well I'm thankful for printed text. I guess once Christ the King is over, I will be reading the missal as if I am a newbee (I very infrequently go to english language Mass). Or I can grab a cheat sheet/card.

I mean I was tempted to grab a missal to begin with during retreat ... since I kept forgetting what the proper responses were.

What I should have said when the priest said in english "pray brethren that our sacrifice ...."
is: "Que el Senor reciba de tus manos " etc. instead of trying to muddle through the english

(I was the only one attending the Mass -- hence no one to save me from myself).

Our priest is a little resistant to the changes so we won't be doing it until we absolutely have to. He went over the changes last Sunday because his Bishop insisted that all parishes do that before Advent, but he made fun of the changes and said that things had been fine for the last 42 years he has been saying Mass, and he doesn't like the new wording - says it is not how we speak. Anyway, he will have to go along with it eventually and we will all forget that the changes ever happened. It must have been harder for people when Latin changed to vernacular, so this shouldn't be too hard!

nunsense maybe someone should remind your parish priest that the Missal we have been using was an "experiment" and more importantly only meant to be temporary. When my priest shared that fact with us I almost laughed. (I guess 42 years is temporary according to the Church, lol)

It actually is considering that 42 years is but a speck in the 2000 year history of the Church. No one will remember the lame duck ICEL.

I know, I know, but he is a really sweet guy. It's a shame that he puts more emphasis on the touchy feely stuff than on the liturgy but my hope for the Church is in the young priests being trained now. Some of the post Vat 2 priests have become a little set in their ways (funny that - when it really has been such a short time, litugically speaking) and they don't want to change. My guy will do what he has to do when he has to do it, but he will probably also continue to complain about it for a little while - until he gets used to it.

Or even Aramaic since the Jewish Apostles like St Peter would have been using this...

St Paul was probably one of the first who actually used Greek.
