Lil Red
I received this comment on my blog, under the post of St. Maria Goretti's feast day:
And, here we have it in a nutshell -- one of the reasons why I just left Catholicism: the Pope calling rape an "attractive pleasure." Even though 11-year-old Goretti had told her parents on numerous occasions about being weirded out and battered by the 20-year-old weirdo next door, and showed no signs of being the sacrificial virgin Lolita the Catholics adore fantasizing her as. Good riddance, Rome.
I have no idea what this person is talking about. advice?
I would guess they have read it (maybe innocently and maybe to twist it) as the Pope saying raping a child is an attractive pleasure. I read it, however, that little Maria resisted the attractive pleasures of childhood play, choosing instead to pray and to help her mother with the housework. HopefulBride
I read her blog. It's not you my friend; it seems like there are a whole group out there twisting the meaning of St. Maria Goretti's life and what the Magisterium has to say about it. Vincent Vega
?
It was just goofy snarkiness. I didn't want to lame up a transmundane post but I got here from the sidebar, so I didn't know it was here until after I posted it.
BG45
That's awful! And I don't think it's you Red, like FC I always thought the attractive pleasure referred to the play and joys of childhood.
CatherineM
I suspect that some of the issue with what Rome said is in the translation into English. It's either a bad translation, or is one of those things that just doesn't translate well.
tinytherese
Also, just handing someone something to read or someone looking something up isn't enough. We need to make sure that they read it all through properly.
Lil Red
I wonder if they have the original Italian or Latin to have someone look at.
Basilisa Marie
From what I understand of Maria's story, her rapist had been trying to seduce her for a while and tried twice previously to rape her before the incident where he stabbed her, and she was canonized in part because of her adamant insistence of what he was trying to do was sinful. Could the pope mean 'attractive' in the literal sense, as in he was physically attracted to her? I also think something is probably lost in translation. MissyP89
This isn't the first time I've heard an argument made like this. There are certain people that are of the opinion that because Rome canonized Maria, we're being told it's glorifying women that allow men to hurt them instead of standing up for themselves. Really, seriously. Given that she was 12 at the time of her death, it's not uncommon for the pedophilia line to be spewed regarding her canonization. It's disgusting, and ridiculous, and a futile attempt to soil the good name of my patron. *gets down off soapbox*
CatherineM
It sounds like she stood up for herself to death.
