Wikitiki
Good luck! If I ever have to fly with my $1600+ violin and $200+ bow (which I hope I never do) they will never leave my side ever.
Basilisa Marie
Good luck!
My $2k clarinet never leaves my side...it regularly gets checked for drugs, though. Even when I'm at the gate, it's always sitting on the floor between my feet. But I found out a couple days ago that the TSA allows musical instruments as a separate bag in addition to your carry on and personal item! Whether or not the airline will depends on the airline. cooterhein
Next week I'm flying cross-country to Maryland and I want to bring my guitar with me. It's an official "move", so it's not like I'm just going on a trip. Unfortunately I only have a gig bag, so there's no way I'm going to check it. Is it possible they'll let me take it as a carry-on? It's only a $100 guitar, but it's my baby and I love her and really want to take her with me. I'm flying southwest. Think I'll be able to take it with me?
I've taken a guitar with me on a couple of flights. One was actually international. Yes, you can have it as a carryon. Just walk on the plane with it, and the first flight attendant that sees you will direct you to some kind of little closet area where you can stow it. I guess it might vary by airline, but in my experience you won't have to use the overhead compartment and you should be able to put it somewhere that's a little more secure. Edit- I'm sure they won't make you put it in one specific area, but the little closet thing is the one I've always gone with. TheresaThoma
I fly Southwest pretty regularly and on a few of the flights I have seen guitars as carry-ons. Usually they are in a little "closet" area right up near the door. I would guess that it shouldn't be a problem.

cmaD2006
Ok - so does anyone have experience on Jetblue with a guitar?
TeresaBenedicta
Well shoot, now I'm all nervous again... my guitar does not fit the dimensions of carry-on luggage, and Southwest policy clearly states that it must. If I try anyways and have to check it, I'm out $50 (half the price of the guitar itself) and could end up with a damaged instrument. If I ship it to myself, it'll be a while until I get and still cost money. Ugh.
TeresaBenedicta
I tried to go ship my guitar today... and they wanted to charge $85 for it!!! Yeah right. I'm going to take my chances on the airline.

Vincent Vega
I really think you'll be okay. I see goofy hipsters with their guitars in the airport all the time.
