Next week I'm flying cross-country to Maryland and I want to bring my guitar with me. It's an official "move", so it's not like I'm just going on a trip. Unfortunately I only have a gig bag, so there's no way I'm going to check it. Is it possible they'll let me take it as a carry-on? It's only a $100 guitar, but it's my baby and I love her and really want to take her with me. I'm flying southwest. Think I'll be able to take it with me?

You're taking a risk depending on the size of plane you're flying. If they make you gate check it, you're out one guitar. Also people will sometimes shove stuff in even if you have a guitar in the overhead. This is what I would suggest. As you board the plane, quickly slip the guitar in the first class coat closet. 9 out of 10 times, the first class attendant will ignore it.

Couple things:
1. It's Southwest. No first class.
2. All they fly are 737s, the overhead bins would definitely be big enough.
3. You do have a point about people trying to jam their stuff in above/below/in front of/behind/inside/whatever of it.

Hm. I guess I'll have to be extra sure to watch as everyone else puts their stuff in.

You could try putting your stuff in (including your laptop bag/backpack/whatever, placing that near the neck so it fills up the "empty space") and just closing the door, assuming that there's not a ton of extra space still remaining (in which case that would be kind of jerky).

I might try that. If I remember correctly, I think the first set of bins are small in length than the others.

Definitely get on when they call for those who need extra time to board. You do, and don't be shy.

I'll be on before that. Southwest boards by groups (A, B, and C) and you have a specified spot in line depending on when you check-in. When I bought my ticket, I paid the extra $10 for the "early-bird" check-in, which guarantees me to be one of the first 15 or so people on board.

Yeah, TSA will not have a problem, just call Southwest or something to be super duper sure. I don't know what their overbooking policy is like (I only fly the Star Alliance and United/Continental), but if the flight is overbooked there may be an issue since a guitar is technically "oversized"...even if you're there first. But call or check the website to see.

Oh and definitely do this:

:) That way even if someone is a meanieface and shoves their roller bag in next to it, you should be a-ok.

Good thing you are flying Southwest:

I know this is completely unhelpful, but I've flown my cheap guitar around in a hardshell on SW... never had any trouble.. except they always loved to check it for drugs... cause I look uber suspicious..

I knew there was a reason I don't fly Southwest
