TeresaBenedicta
Next week I'm flying cross-country to Maryland and I want to bring my guitar with me. It's an official "move", so it's not like I'm just going on a trip. Unfortunately I only have a gig bag, so there's no way I'm going to check it. Is it possible they'll let me take it as a carry-on? It's only a $100 guitar, but it's my baby and I love her and really want to take her with me. I'm flying southwest. Think I'll be able to take it with me? Wikitiki
Hm, could you ship it to where you're going instead of taking it on the plane with you?

Vincent Vega
Just be sure to check in and show up early so you can board first and get the overhead space.
Kind of a last resort option for me. I'm trying to keep traveling costs as low as I can and I already have to ship my books out there. But if I can't get it on, I suppose that'll be my only option.
yes.
I paid the extra $10 to make sure that I'm in the first 20 to board. So, if all goes well, it looks like I can take it.
CatherineM
I never have trouble when traveling with my guitar. It looks like this:
Jesus_lol
I had my 1200$ acoustic guitar in a locked hardshell case, flown from guatemala to alberta. when i opened the undamaged case i found a guitar with a shattered lower bout, about 5 cracks paralell to the grain, one about 16 inches long, and a crack across the grain, and bunched upwards. i about cried. OnlySunshine
One of the flights I took from New York had a passenger that was carrying on an Indian sitar, I believe. He tried to keep it between his knees but AirTran is very strict about not having anything in between your legs or feet that could potentially injure you or someone else. They almost made him check it but he was adamant that he wanted it as carry-on only. The flight attendant took it and put it in the overhead bin since there was some room. I didn't see any damage to it when it was over. It was without a case, too. Whatever flight you are going on, it might be a good idea to call customer relations and ask them if they will accept a carry-on instrument. You may be able to do it in place of a carry-on bag and check the bag. This is from the TSA website:
Bring your stringed instruments, within carrier size limitations, as carry-on items.
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1235.shtm

CatherineM
I've heard about the TSA checking to see what people were carrying between their legs, but not the FAA. Or are they the same thing now?
