Do you get your husband to donate? Mom and I made my daddy--he had never given blood until he was 55! I still think he did it only because I was running that drive...

Someone else on my blood drive team's father had never donated blood either. We thought it was funny that they were more nervous than we were. They were troopers, though, and now are regular donors!

My husband is afraid of needles. He doesn't even like them taking my blood, though he did pretty well with that the last time I had blood drawn.
My mom thinks it's funny how the biggest guys seem to be the ones who have the most problems with needles. :hehe2:

I started donating platelets this summer... I kinda like just sitting there relaxing for so long...cause I'm lazy :)

edit: I was very annoyed last time I went tho cause my iron count was 1 point too low.. and they used to re-test and I was always fine.. but they have new policy that they could only do it once... so they turned me away and told me to go eat some liver :x

I've had iron problems too. If liver is not your thing, try eating dark green veggies and red meat cooked at about medium to medium rare. The day my doctor told me that I asked my parents if we could have steak with spinach salad and steamed broccoli for dinner. They were actually open to the idea until I wanted to eat it every day.

God bless-

Also, if you drink coffee or tea, drink decaf a week before you donate. Caffeine leeches iron from your blood. Or at least that's what the blood services people told me.

So that might be why my I've always been on the low side for iron. :) Also I've heard that drinking too much milk does that too.

I donated once in high school, and promptly turned green because I was a bit dehydrated and the notsocompetant local blood donation center (not Red Cross) volunteers wouldn't give me any food or drink while I was lying down. The lovely EMTs gave me an IV to rehydrate (after trying to find my veins four times) and so they had to take me in the ambulance because of protocal. It was amesome, though, because I had a teenie tiny stigmata on my hands from the butterfly needles. Back at school in time for our Pit Orchestra rehearsal/Musical runthrough. :D

So I want to do it again because I'm also O neg, but I know I have to drink a TON of water during the day before and day of. My mom's that way too.

After Charlotte was born, I ended up with an infection and had an IV in my hand for 3 days, during the Triduum. The "stigmata" scar was still there until very recently, like after Easter this year.

how old do you have to be to give blood? isn't it 17?
[/quote]

17 in general, some states allow sixteen if you've got parental consent. You've also got to be at least 110 pounds. :)

Also, though, be careful if you're donating through your high school. I used to run the blood drives at my HS and we never took 16 year olds. It was too complicated about getting 16 year olds to remember their forms and everything.

So, if you're donating through school and are 16, double check with the blood drive people.

I really would love to donate blood, I'm just not sure how I would feel about the needle. That's the one thing preventing me from doing it. I'm donating my hair first.

Just don't look at the needle, all you'll feel is a tiny pinch. :) But donating your hair is excellent! I did it a few times, but my hair grows super slowly.

yeh i really dont like needles, but if i just dont look.. its really a small pinch and then you don't feel it at all... where I've been they will even cover up the place where the needle is so you dont accidentally look at it

Hey pham!

I donated blood today! Last Sunday, I started drinking only decaf tea, and my iron was thankfully 43%! In the south, it has to be between 30% and 60%.

One thing, though. EAT A LOT BEFORE YOU GO AND DONATE. I only had a banana with peanut butter and was scolded by the nurse. I also almost fainted because of not eating a hearty breakfast twice.

If you haven't already in the past few weeks and are able, please consider donating blood! The worst part was my own fault--if I ate enough, I wouldn't have almost fainted!
