OnlySunshine
First off, thank you for taking the time to answer my first question. I'm a bit confused, however. When you state that it is a sin to start the act of sinning, is it a mortal sin or a venial sin if they didn't go through with the act? What if this person went to that webpage but only viewed the objectionable words, not pictures and not videos? I'm also talking about someone who has gone to Confession numerous times for this problem and is seeking psychotherapy for it so it could possibly be termed an "addiction." Would Confession be required before the person could partake in Communion? Thanks again. Edited August 15, 2011 by Lil Red
Brother Adam
This question is really best answered between a penitent and a priest. The priest can ask the penitent specific questions that will help him make the determination whether a sin was mortal or not by taking factors such as addiction into question. The same question, when is it okay to take Communion should also be answered by a priest in confession who can carefully examine the situation of the penitent. While we can make general statements based on the catechism, canon law, and moral law, often specific circumstances require a pastoral approach in order to answer fully. It may be that the penitent in this case simply put himself in the near occasion of sin, or it could be a grave sin diminished to a venial sin because of force of habit, or it could be the sin was mortal. As a general rule those who deal with the sin of lust should present themselves for confession on a regular, even weekly basis if necessary. Confession is a powerful Sacrament of mercy and healing and can help break us of sinful habits.
