Livin_the_MASS
To the Point Besides the obvious literal meaning--- the historical event of the Cross--- what else have we learned about Jesus' understanding of the hour? In the hour: ---We receive wine, the best wine (cf. Jn. 2:1-11) ---We are empowered to worship in a new way: in spirit and truth (cf. Jn. 4:23-24) ---We hear God's Word in order to receive new life (cf. Jn. 5:25) ---We gather together as "Greeks" and "Jews" to celebrate the new Passover (cf. Jn. 4:23, 12:20, 13:1). ---We receive the living bread, the fruit borne of the grain of wheat that has died (cf. Jn. 12:23-24) ---We see the Lamb of God lifted up, drawing all men to Himself (cf. Jn. 12:32). "Take a second look at the list: bread and wine, the Word of the Lord, spiritual worship, a new Passover for Jews and Greeks. What does this add up to? "It's the Mass! The Mass is the hour when all this takes place--- and Jesus knew it from the start. Moreover, He prepared His mother and disciples to grasp the deeper mystery of how His self-offering on the Cross would be re-presented for all time. At Mass, we receive bread of finest wheat, with the best wine. There, we offer spiritual worship that is open to all people. There, we hear the Word of God and receive forgiveness for our sins---new life amid spiritual death. There, we mark the new Passover and behold the Lamb of God "who takes away the sins of the world." (And all this, coincidentally, takes about an hour to complete on the average Sunday, at least at my parish!) "Yes Jesus' death and Resurrection marked His finest hour; but His last Passover meal was not merely a warm--up, or a stop along the way to greater things. Jesus saw it as an essential part of the main event of His life. To Him, it was a part of that definitive moment, His "hour." The Apostle John was careful to show that the Eucharist was an urgent concern of Jesus' own Heart, that it held a central place in Jesus' self-awareness and in His awareness of His mission. "The Mass is, in a sense, the point of John's Gospel and Jesus' mission. Whenever Jesus focused on His "hour," He saw His death and Resurrection, yes; but He also saw beyond these events to their extension throughout time and space in the celebration of the Eucharistic liturgy. These elements---His suffering, death, Resurrection, and Eucharist---are all of a piece. Together, they are the one Paschal Mystery. In the Old Covenant, paschal meant Passover; in the new itn means Easter. In the Eucharist, which is our participation in the Easter mystery, we "passover" to new life that is eternal (cf. Jn. 17:1-5)." I love Scott Hahn Thought I would share this with our Protestant brothers and sisters God Bless Jason

Justified Saint
The one problem I have with most of Mr. Hahn's books is that they are so short! He leaves you thristing for more. That was one thing I actually didn't like about Hail, Holy Queen - he could have written so much more on that subject. But Hahn does try to appeal to all Catholics with his books - one thing that people like James White doesn't understand (who forgets that Christianity isn't limited to those who have studied Greek and the Bible all their life).
To those who may not know: Protestant apologist James White, the best Protestantism has to offer some say, who makes his living with his anti-Catholic radio programs, website, debates, books, and so on, had the disappointment of having his only sister become a Catholic. Livin_the_MASS
Patty Bonds: I had developed an intense hunger for the Eucharist from the moment I found the quote Dr. Hahn had used from Ignatius of Antioch: "They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, flesh which suffered for our sins and which that Father, in his goodness, raised up again. They who deny the gift of God are perishing in their disputes." I had counted the days till Easter from 233 on. It was a painful wait. In our Parish the candidates can walk in the communion line and receive a blessing. It was both a blessing and a heartbreak to walk forward each week and be so close to the Precious Body and Blood of my Lord and not be able to receive him.
Good story This stuck out to me! NICE Thank Katholikos! God Bless You Jason

Katholikos
welcome, Jason. BTW, for anyone interested, my conversion story is at chnetwork.org and also at revolutionoflove.com. Patty Bonds (sister of anti-Catholic apologist James White) wrote: "In our Parish the candidates can walk in the communion line and receive a blessing. It was both a blessing and a heartbreak to walk forward each week and be so close to the Precious Body and Blood of my Lord and not be able to receive him." This practice of "blessings in lieu of communion" is an abuse which has now been corrected in many of the Churches in the Diocese of Phoenix and certainly should end totally with the publication of the new GIRM and Redemptionis Sacramentum. Peace to all, Jay Damien (Likos)

Justified Saint
I live aboue five miles from James White. A few weeks ago I was in the neighborhood and "accidentially" drove by his house. Well, it was certainly an interesting experience to say the least. To think what evil takes place in that little, humble dwelling.
