WYD Cultural Program Participants Must Be Endorsed by Bishops' Conferences

It has come to our attention that Michael Voris, a US based media producer, is scheduled to offer independent catechesis sessions out of a hotel in Madrid during World Youth Day 2011. There has been some confusion regarding his affiliation with World Youth Day. Michael Voris, the clergy and the laity associated with him, and their media efforts “Real Catholic TV” and “No Bull in Madrid” are not in any way recognized or approved by World Youth Day 2011.
Catechesis at World Youth Day is offered by Bishops of the Catholic Church in union with Pope Benedict XVI, who has invited the young people of the world to join him in Madrid for this celebration of faith and life. The Vatican's Pontifical Council for the Laity selects and invites Bishops, and only Bishops, from around the world to conduct Catechesis sessions at WYD in various languages.... Whether or not he is orthodox aside, I could see why the WYD folks might not want him associated with them. He has a "unique" delivery style that turns many people off to the message that he's trying to convey.

Brother Adam

It is the liberal agenda at work. He is not claiming to be an official part of WYD. It is nothing new for there to be unofficial venues outside of WYD, but for some reason this is the first time ever that WYD has shunned a commentator so publicly and explicitly.

I had lunch with Michael Voris about two years ago...I will write a blog on that later, and he is not as bad as people make him out to be. He is a very nice guy! And his hair is real haha. But for real, I just hope there is no hidden agenda from the folks at WYD!

Why wouldn't you want someone to talk to people about the faith, especially, at a conference for Catholics all around the world? Regardless, if you like his style or not, some people like his style, therefore, make it available for people who like it?

Its like the Tridentine Mass, not everyone enjoys going to the Tridentine Mass, but Holy Mother Church makes it available for people who wish to attend it.

Eh, the WYD folks are just covering their sixes in case Mark Shea raises a stink about Voris again.

I'm sorry but this video seems disingenuous. If Michael Voris was simply going and doing everything he said WITHOUT the two presentations, the officials of WYD wouldn't bat an eye. Its the two talks that got him flagged and rightly so. I've never been to WYD but it seems to me that its about celebrating the Catholic faith. Voris on more than several occasions has been harsh and critical of the USCCB and individual bishops. In fact I don't think I have ever seen a video of his (and I've seen a bunch) where he's celebrating the faith at all! His "we've never said anything contrary to Catholic teaching" is fine. (Although there is a video or two that could contest that statement) But the simple fact is, Voris spends more time stating how others are wrong vs talking about how Catholicism is right.

There is a time and a place for everything. If there is ever a World Curmudgeon Day, I'm sure the Vatican would have Voris as the keynote speaker

I put some thought into what Jamie said, and it hit me. I don't think I've ever watched a Voris video where he's not saying how someone is wrong and he is right. Plus he blows some things totally out of proportion, like that faith sharing experience thing a lot of Protestant churches did with Muslims and Jews this summer, and one Catholic parish was going to participate in; he made it sound like any Catholic parish you went to would be under siege by hordes of Imams. Then when the one parish participating followed the instructions of its Bishop to not allow the imam scheduled to come to speak during the homily, I don't think he ever bothered to note the fact (or I missed that video).

I think Voris is right that we're sinking in the mud pit... but his approach is all wrong... he's going at it an intellectual way, when that's not the main issue. We had very well catechized peoplep prior in the 50's, and the great amnesia that swept through the 60's onwards still happened... the main issue is a spiritual one. We've lost a sense of genuine mysticism, and that is what we have to return. The knowledge part is secondary.

And like jaime (the artist formerly known as hot stuff) said, that's not really the point of WYD. WYD is for people to come together and be joyful about their faith. It's so that we can go back out in the world and make disciples of all nations. And, quite frankly, it's difficult to do if you're a big cranky pantaloons.

:like: Oh definitely agree! From the people I've talked to who have been to WYD before, and from some of the stuff I've watched on shows like Life on the Rock, he really doesn't seem to fit the general atmosphere of the event. One girl in the Catholic Student Association just came home from study abroad in Madrid, and was upset she couldn't stay next month for WYD.

This speaks volumes about Voris. I posted a very respectful but critical comment on that video. Not that you will ever see it. It's pretty clear they are only interested in rah rah comments. I really find that pathetic.
