Basilisa Marie
If those heels were any higher I'd fall and break my ankle. Mine roll on a regular basis anyway. I'll wear flip flops to mass if I don't get a chance to change and I'm wearing jeans, especially in the summer. Mostly I subscribe to a "when in Rome" attitude when choosing mass wardrobe - when I'm with my family, it's khakis or a skirt. When I was in college, it was jeans and a clean t shirt. Oh man, at least they're taking you to mass! During resident assistant training in college we had to remind our supervisors that we would have to skip one of the sessions because they forgot to schedule in mass (at a catholic college no less, lol ). But I like the skirt idea, if you can fit it in your purse, and just throw it on over your short shorts. Maybe try saying something like, "I'm not worried about sticking out at mass, but I personally feel very uncomfortable wearing shorts like those to mass. Would it be all right if I could bring a skirt with me to put on right before mass starts?" If you frame it in that sort of way, I don't see how your leader can refuse you. And if she does, at least you can know you gave it your best effort.

Luigi
I'm going to cheer camp this weekend with my Catholic high school squad. It's Friday-Sunday, so we're going to Mass Sunday morning I was very happy to find out. We were informed that we are going in our camp clothes for the day--short soffee shorts and a tshirt. Not so happy. I tried to raise my concern about wearing shorts that barely cover our butts to Mass, but she replied along the lines of "oh, I'm sure it'll be fine. The whole squad will be matching." I cannot wear that to Mass in good conscious; I would feel unclean. Any ideas on what to do?
Do you have a wrap-around skirt? You could wear it over your shorts and still remove it quickly & easily when you start to cheer.

And then we'd have to start threads on the evils of women wearing sexy shoes, and reiterate that from head to foot we need to be dressed in potato sacks. LaPetiteSoeur
My priest friend wears sandals. Many of the Sisters I know wear sandals. I tend to wear some nice sandals that are VERY comfortable (as a cantor, comfort is key) and won't make me trip (as I can do that all by myself). I totally understand not wearing the beach type flip flops to church, but the nice, leather type ones I don't really see problems with.

Not exactly the place you are supposed to be looking for people to be checking out your body parts.
Deb
So, on the topic of flip flops. I think they should be banned from all churches. Nothing is as annoying as kneeling in prayer for Mass and listening to herds of people flip flopping their way around the chapel. It is annoying and obnoxious and while you are at it, leave your shorts, sleeveless tops and low cut tops at home. That goes for men and women. Please do not get up to lectern or serve as an EM while you are dressed like you have to hurry up and get out and get to the beach. If you are flipping on your feet and flopping out of your shirt, don't volunteer. Sit in the back and keep your hands over your chest. You are coming to receive GOD. You are coming to spend time in the presence of the LORD, the Creator of all things, present in the Tabernacle and in the Holy Eucharist of the Altar. Do not become complacent when in the presence of the Glory of the Lord. Respect. Awe. Amazement. Worship. Believe it or dress like you just stopped in for a word and a snack before you flip flop off to your picnic and don't wonder what people think of your committment to your faith and to God. Not that we are judging you, of course. That would be wrong. We are praying for you though and trying to remember the key things for summer Masses. ALways sit in the front pew. Never look around, never look down during communion in case you accidentally view shoes from hell, never look up or you may see what others are wearing. Wear ear plugs if necessary to drown out the chorus of flippers during communion. Offer it up as you beg the Lord to please make them stop.
