What My Band Is Playing At Mass This Sunday

Well, it's encouraging to see that you are tuned in to the dangers of the mass turning into entertainment. Hopefully, your awareness of this can be a positive influence on the ones who seem not to care one way or the other.

For me, I would have to work extra hard to concentrate at your mass, but to your point, that's me. Not everyone is me. I just hope that with all that music, there is at least some time set aside for silence. I think music directors who feel that the entire mass has to have music playing, even in between songs as background music, do the congregation a great disservice. A couple of minutes of silence would at least allow me to gather my thoughts, instead of being this guy all mass long > :dancer1:

Brother Adam

The nice thing about P&W parishes is they are usually run by extremely orthodox conservative Catholic priests and laity.

at least in my area, you'd be dead wrong...they are all happy-clappy, liberal, do-what-you-want Masses. so again, mileage varies.

there are parts of the Mass where no music is to be played - Eucharistic prayer is one of them. i don't know the GIRM though off-hand.

I was just affirming your terminology. The OP will indeed be performing songs at Mass.

I honestly think that many others - even those who prefer P&W - would have to work at concentrating. I think that those who prefer have to work at concentrating because P&W is everywhere. It's easy to get caught up in a song. A song comes on the radio, we start singing it. Our minds can wander, but we still sing. And it doesn't really draw our attention out of what we are used to. That is part of the reason that chant is first pick when it comes to music. Because it's not something we are used to. It kind of shocks us into the realization that this is something special.

I agree completely with the second part.

And I do admit that I *always* have a hard time concentrating. In general. Not just at Mass. But also, I have a degree in music, so I have a hard time concentrating because half the time I'm wincing at bad vowels or wrong notes. haha.

I'm not going to lie, Tantum Ergo in the youtube video was much better than I expected.

Though, and I know this is off-topic, the second part of the video, I definitely don't think you should break into that during the benediction. Benediction is being blessed directly by the Lord, not the time for people to be singing and turning their attention away from the 30 seconds of amazingness :) Maybe something to consider next time.

But, God Bless your endeavors as you attempt to help people raise their hearts in prayer. I am very excited about you all singing Tantum Ergo!

Thanks again, Lisa! Yeah I actually agree with you about the Benediction song-horrible choice. I don't usually play with that group and I had no say in their song selection. But Tantum Ergo sounded great!
