just out of curiousity, what instruments will be playing Tantum Ergo?
All of them, but mixed very differently. Piano takes the lead, drums give an "ambiance" using sticks with a yarn ball on the end, and staying mostly on the symbols. Electric guitar mostly fills in the background, using an acoustic simulator for an amp.

It will sound kinda like this:

Btw that's me on the piano at an XLT with a different group.

With all due respect to you and your band, and admitting the fact that I have never heard you play, I think that I personally would have a much harder time preparing, focusing on and then recovering from the holy sacrifice on the altar, with that music lineup.

I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'.

Wow thanks for saving my soul. Does Cam42 send his regards? Although, you are confusing me, because I thought there was a special section of Hell just for the Haugenites.

I was being facetious. The music you are playing is much better than 90% of the garbage out there played at Mass every weekend, even if not the ideal.

I may be in the minority ... but in the right setting (and circumstance) it could be the right set of music :).

Wishing you the best in this endeavor ... and I like the Communion Hymn.

I took a Prayer and Worship class with Tom Tomaszek a looooooonnnnnnngggg time ago. It was a good class.

And ... I'm definitely in the minority on this. I think I like your instrumentation. The only one I'd be curious about is the sound of the Electric guitar. Drums with muted sticks ... cool.

Sorry, I knew that. I guess my reply didn't come off well-I was trying to be facetious also.

Thanks for the encouragement. If our music director records us (he often does) I'll post the recording sometime next week.

Dells, honest question...

For the average Catholic attending mass--not the devout or musically inclined--but, the average Catholic who attends your parish. Would you, being completely honesty, say that the music your band plays during mass "entertains" them, or "prepares and assists them in prayer"?

Brother Adam

I'm not Dells, but I can say for those accustomed to P&W parish communities it assists them in prayer. An extraordinary form at an SSPX chapel can be entertaining to a non-Catholic as an observer of a custom. Gregorian chant is the ideal, followed by polyphony and the the organ at the lower level of sacred music. I would consider that the meat and P&W the milk. We can't stay there and it isn't the ideal, but it is a stepping stone. I would say it does not help the liturgy but does not particularly harm it. The music played at 90% of parishes is absolute garbage to the detriment of the liturgy. It is much easier to enter into worship using P&W than Haugen witch is anthropocentric.

Psalm 150.

Dust, here's my thoughts:

I play in the band mostly to minister to the youth outside the Liturgy, and XLTs and other youth ministry events. However, we have been asked to play at Mass, and I feel that what we are playing prepares and assists the faithful in prayer better that what is usally played at our Parish, which happens to be David Haas, Marty Haugen, and their other Gather hymnal cronies.

it's a serious concern of mine whether we are distracting or entertaining people, but for the most part I don't feel that is a problem. My biggest beef with any of the songs we are playing is the Mass of A Joyful Heart parts, which the parish is making us play...they said we could start doing a better Mass setting when the whole parish switches Mass settings in September.

P&W music assists the people in prayer because they can actually sing along. It's intense. It draws you in.

Personally, my preference would be for more chant, and no guitars, but I'm not in control of my parish's music, and I think that by playing in the band I am at least improving the quality of the music.

As a side note, here's something I was told by a Father David Mary Engo (google him-he's a pretty cool guy):
"We live in a world that is fully of noise. People have their mp3 players, YouTube, television, and to reach our teens, we need to overcome the noise that they are accustomed to."

And I'll add one more thing: I have the best spiritual experience at the LifeTeen Mass with music done by a band. It personally assists me in prayer, although I understand that may not be true for everyone.
