BigJon16
My Pastor offered me a job as the assistant Sacristan at our parish. I'm definately going to take the job, but I'm not totally sure what it is. So what is a sacristan and what do they do? Thanks!
CatherineM
A sacristan prepares the altar and the vestments before mass, and takes care of them after mass. It is a great way to learn the name and function of all the various linens and vestments. Depending on the priest, you may be required to put out the vestments, although some priests prefer to do that themselves. When I was one, we carefully starched everything, but these days, that's not done as much. They also fill the wine vessels and ciboriums to be taken up at the offertory. In some parishes they do actual cleaning of the church itself.
