infinitelord1
During mass today, an interim priest mentioned that there was a time when we had 3 popes at the same time. He referred to this as the triple papacy. I was wondering if anyone had some good info on this.
Lil Red
The book Pope Fiction has a chapter on this, I think, but i don't have the book anymore. I know two were anti-popes and the third was the real pope.

CatherineM
It's one of the reasons that Pope John XXIII picked his name. He was a church historian, and one of the anti-popes called himself John23. By picking that name, he definitively showed they weren't "in line."

thessalonian
There has never been more than one pope. It is not possible in Christ's Church. We can be sure of that. There were around 30 antipopes throughout the early history of the Church. As you said there was one time when there were two antipopes. The Catholic Encyclopedia lists all the men that were considered legitimate popes. There were times when there was confusion about who the real pope was. Here is the list of anti-popes. Luigi
The triple papacy happened in St. Louis - it was the Cardinal vs. the Padres - the play went 1 - 6 - 3 Joaquin Andujar ("One Tough Domincan"), to De Jesus (shortstop covering second), to de los Santos, with John XXIII out at first. I know. I was there. I saw this play mayself! (Not factually accurate, but fun nonetheless.)

I know in many if not most of the cases the Church settled who was pope and reunited.

journeyman
Was that triple play back in 1981-82? The only one I ever saw, and it was at a Cardinal's game in St. Louis.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam
With the patriarchates, having multiple people trying to claim the authority as successor of Peter/Paul (Rome) or successor of Andrew (Constantinople) etc is not uncommon. The eighth ecumenical council was convened to determine who was the rightful patriarch of Constantinople, but eventually these things get sorted out by the Church.
