Hi Everyone!
My name is Rose, I'm new here :) I'm 19, and I live in PA. I was wondering, I've been dsicerning since I was 9, and the desire to be a cloistered carmelite nun keeps on coming back, even when I was having problems with my faith. I thought maybe going on a live-in retreat or something would help me sort it out. Does anyone know if the Elysburg Carmelites or any cloistered carmelites around here do that kind of thing, and if they did, do you think they'd let me stay for like a day or two? thank you :)

Beinvenue!

First off, welcome to Vocation Station! I don't know much about the Carmelites (Dominican here!) but there are many phatmassers who are discerning the Carmelites.

Also, do you have a spiritual director? If not, it might be a good thing, as he can help you figure out God's will.

Dieu vous benisse!

Unfortunately, the Elysburg Carmelites are not the type of Carmelites that allow a live-in. They are strictly cloistered so you can only enter the monastery as a postulant. They do allow guests to live on the premises for a few days, but you won't be able to see inside the enclosure. If you are interested in doing a live-in, you might contact these Carmels that allow live-in experiences:

Speaking of Postulants isn't there a postulant at Elysburg who was on this forum? She should be becoming a novice soon I would think.

Hello Rose and welcome. It would be worth talking with the Elysburg community since they are somewhat closeby, and a very good Carmel. I don't know where in PA you are, but letters and phone conversations are sometimes a good way to break the ice with a community and then visiting can clarify things even more. I think the Philadelphia Carmel may allow live-ins, and they are also a good Carmel. If Elysburg only allows a couple of days, then God can certainly work with that, and you would at least have a better idea as to whether you want to continue with them.

Elysburg only accepts letters not even phone calls at the beginning. I live less than 100 miles from them in Carlisle, PA. I had gotten a brochureto send to Brandi several months ago, but she is now going to CA next month. This is the information:

I do not assume that there will be a public ceremony for her clothing??? If appropriate could I have her baptismal name. I would like to send her a card. Do you live in PA also?

reminiscere

I believe her name was Moriah. The ceremony is in the Nuns' choir and the celebrant gives the name. http://www.gloria.tv/?media=122205

I don't believe there will be a public clothing ceremony. Her parents are going, I think, but it will be a private thing. I'll send you a PM with her baptismal name. I don't think she'd mind since she posted it here at one point.

I don't live in Pennsylvania myself. ;)

Cecilia, I have a friend who was discerning Carmel and was hoping for a live-in too. But she ended up entering a more traditional Carmel that doesn't allow them, like Elysburg, and now she's been there over a year and is a Novice and is very happy .. so you never know.

I wonder if what you need now is a retreat. Also, as was mentioned above, if you did visit Elysburg you could stay a few days just not inside the enclosure. But you would get a sense as to whether the Lord was calling you there or not, and get to speak with the Prioress in the parlor. There are good reasons for not allowing live-ins - one: it would be a distraction to their cloistered life to continually allow guests to come in.

If I were you I'd give the old-fashioned way a shot, and at least write Elysburg and go visit :like: Mother Stella-Marie is very kind, so I have heard. God bless!
