Adrestia
I would suggest to stop drinking altogether, at least for a while (maybe a few months) and fast once a week. The discipline that is required to fast on a regular basis will spill over into other areas of your life. If there are people close to you that you can trust, let them know that you have decided to stop drinking for a while so they can support you when the impulse hits. God bless! Totus Tuus
I hear this and I don't get it. I thought almost all people drink for the "buzz" or to relieve stress.
I don't think you have to get a buzz to relax. Maybe I am confused, but I am a tank so it's really hard for me to get a buzz at all, so I am just speaking from experience: I don't drink to get buzzed. I think social drinking to enjoy the taste and feel of alcohol is different from setting out to purposely get buzzed because you need it in order to cope with whatever life is throwing at you. We need the sacraments, counseling and good friends for that. Drinking isn't something (imo) that should be "used" for that reason. I'm open to others' insight on this. And keep in mind, like I said, I go to AA meetings but I am still learning about the effects of alcohol on people since I grew up around tons of alcoholics and just realized a couple of years ago how messed up a lot of stuff I was raised with is. SoylentGreene
If you know you have a problem with controlling yourself with alcohol the best thing to do is not drink it all. That's what's worked for me. That and finding a social group that has activities where alcohol isn't served. It's not easy but you can do it. Guest
I don't think so, but then I don't know almost all people. I drink 'because' 1) I like the taste of what I am drinking, 2) it goes well/compliments whatever I am eating, 3) it's a celebration of some sort or 4) business meetings or dinners (which ultimately fall into # 1 or # 2) I don't think it's a good idea to drink to get messed up, or even buzzed.
Good advice and insight. Godbless. Papist
If you can't stop at 2 beers/drinks, then I'd say that is a problem. If so, then it be best to not drink. And remove yourself from situations where there is drinking involved. And, not all people drink to get buzzed. There are many other reasons to...see MiKolbe's post. Adrestia
One year I gave up alcohol for Lent and added up the amount of $$ I saved to add to the collection at church. It was more than I expected. Granted, I am a beer snob, but still - it was a substantial amount. Now I'm a lot more conscious of how much I spend on booze. Maybe counting your savings will also help you. Michael209
I overcame 17 years of selling /abusing meth, marijuana by use of the Sacraments, Eucharistic Adoration, prayer (and others praying for me), and changing the friends I hung around with. It also helped with my booze problem that I had for more years than my drug problems. I have been clean for 7 years (since I have came into the Church). No AA or NA programs just by the Grace of God and use of the Sacraments (Confession and the Eucharist).
