Laudate_Dominum
I find the English-influenced creoles to be fascinating, from my admittedly limited experience.
Two books that I've read in the past several months had sections about the development of pidgins and creoles and how this is applicable to developing an evolutionary account of human language. You may know more about it than me, but I guess for a long time evolutionary accounts of the origins of language were pretty much suppressed by the dominant Chomskian agenda in linguistics. Apparently it's recently been taking off and the study of pidgins and creoles is one fascinating thread in the discussion.
Laudate_Dominum
One of my friends is from South Africa and she and her husband speak Afrikaans, and I'm pretty sure that he was not from a costal area. Not sure if that really answers your question at all. But they both also speak English as well. I don't think they really used English until they went to school, though.
That's cool. It would be wild to tour southern Africa. South Africa in particular makes me think of epic national parks, amazing flora and fauna, unique cultures, amesome archaeological and paleontological sites, legendary big game and a singular cuisine... That one linguistics class I took didn't get into evolutionary linguistics at all, sadly.
ClareOfAssisi
amesome!! South Africa has been turning up quite a bit in my pleasure reading and I'm curious to learn more. I sometimes drink Rooibos tea for what it's worth. haha. Just curious: Apart from the cape provinces do many people speak Afrikaans? I just wonder if my impression is false. My impression is that there is a great deal of linguistic pluralism in the country, even to this day.
Haha, I love Rooibos (Red bush) . Yep, Afrikaans is everywhere. To give you an idea, you SHOULD be able to speak both Afrikaans and English and we're taught both at school. A lot of people are fully bilingual. If you're Zulu or Xhosa or something then you might be trilingual. We have 11 official languages. You need to be able to communicate with both Afrikaans and English speakers (at the least) in any job.

Will anything even remotely like this ever happen? Not likely. haha. That's so cool that you speak Afrikaans! Must be fun.
