TeresaBenedicta
I'm thinking about getting a netbook before my move. My current laptop is on its last life and won't handle the travel across the country. I'll also need a webcam, to keep in touch with my current parishioners. Anyways... Does anybody have any experience with these devices? Do you have one that you'd recommend? What about a chromebook? Or should I just put in the extra hundred dollars for an iPad? CatherineM
I use an Acer netbook for school. I use a Sony Vaio at home, but it's too big to carry around. The netbook doesn't have a DVD player, so it can be harder to add software, so get it pre-loaded with anything you might want. I also got a screen saver for the screen and a silicon keyboard cover. It amazes me how much dust and lint and stuff that collects on it dragging it in and out of my bag. I also got the bigger battery. It can be used 9 hours, so I never have to take my cord with me to class. I have long skinny fingers, so the somewhat smaller keyboard doesn't bother me. I have thought about getting an ipad, but I like using a keyboard. The netbook works just like my computer except it is smaller and doesn't have a dvd. The ipad is not quite the same as a computer in functioning, and when I test drove one at the store, I found my neck hurting while trying to type because instead of looking ahead at a screen, I was looking down by my fingers. I suppose for someone who watches their hands when they type, it might be more natural.

DemonSlayer
The smaller size of a netbook would kill me, even my 15'6 notebook annoys the hell out of me.
Basilisa Marie
If you opt for a webcam that isn't built in to go with things, I personally like Logitech's.
faithcecelia
I looked at getting a netbook but in the end decided there were too many 'cons' and the only real 'pro' was being light to carry, so I got a new laptop instead and a good, solid backpack carry case so I can take it away with fewer problems. The backpack also has the benefit of being big enough to use for overnight trips without needing another bag.
goldenchild17
I had an 11" MSI wind and used it as my primary computer for the longest time... (cheap I am :D) It really wasn't bad for what it was while I had it. But if you can afford to spend a little more and carry a little bit more, then definitely consider it. Lisa
There are laptops on sale from Toshiba that are almost as cheap as a netbook. My computer (a Toshiba) has also about had it after several years, so I've been getting the emails. Incidently, they are offering a free webcam upgrade right now. Papist
I have a netbook[HP]. It's about 4 years old. Keep in mind they are very scaled down in order to make them small and inexpensive. Definitely not made to install a lot and/or large applications. Need to keep applications/programs on it to a minimum. I' recommend the Acer Eee PC, which start at $250. Macs are just too expensive. Got it at Office Depot, for a price that Wal-mart could not beat. The things flies. I highly recommend a Toshiba laptop. FYI - Toshiba invented the laptop. cruciatacara
I have a Toshiba Netbook and would never buy one again. the keyboard is too small, there is no inbuilt DVD and in the first year there were problems with the BIOS and I had to get it repaired (under warranty but I lost everything on my harddrive). I bought it cuz it was cheap and light but next time I will get a laptop. Not worth the aggravation - especially not being able to add software or play DVDs without an external drive, which adds to the cost anyway! And the small keyboard is a pain. And oh yeah, the webcam gave out around the same time as the BIOS - fixed under warranty but what a bother, and the lighting never seems right so the pics are horrible and so is the video. Not my best buy. Won't recommend.

Email, web browsing and blogging is about all I do with mine. I won't buy a Netbook again. I'd go with ipad or the like[HP slate or Toshiba thrive tablet]. Took a little getting used to apps instead of web browsing - but once I got the hang of it - good stuff. But I'll still get a laptop for the rest - prefer having a keyboard, DVD etc.

I prefer a laptop for my productivity. I see the ipad as a toy/gadget, which is how I see my netbook that I keep under my sofa for quick access/
