faithcecelia
I have just finished Tears at Night, Joy at Dawn Its a very short book - readable in a day if you have the time - and a good job because I cry from almost start to finish. It is the diary of a fanal year seminarian as he is dying of cancer and is just so beautiful and powerful. His faith and sense of vocation are absolutely phenominal. 4588686
Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War. http://www.amazon.co...s/dp/080211928X Good book. Not quite as deep as Dostoevsky, Selimovic, or Tolstoy but quite brilliant. Goes into the complexity of human nature, the way power and ambition shapes our decisions and motivations (not addressed in a cliche way, although it seems like before the end), and the horrors of war. Reads fast. I got through it in about three days but I'm on summer vacation so I had lots of time. Particularly interesting since the author was an Infantry Officer In Vietnam and highly decorated (including the Navy Cross) for valor in combat. I'd give it 4.3 out of five stars. Meesa like it. Scientifically it is a bit dated at times but somehow this doesn't take away from the book at all. I read it after reading Diamond's later stuff but would suggest reading it first if possible. Guns, Germs and Steel and Collapse basically expand upon chapters in this book (to put it mildly). Many excellent reviews of this book have been written so I won't waste time. Teh book pwns. Five stars.
Just bought this!

Quite. Sickening? Even more so. This is not the book to pick up when one is already down in the dumps. While reading it, I felt like puking multiple times. It follows a the story of two very different girls, which can be a bit confusing at first. By the middle of the book, their lives tie together, leaving you frustrated at how some Afghans were forced to go from a good life to bad or from a bad life to worse. For anyone who has read The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns is slightly more political than The Kite Runner, although politics is certiantly not the main theme. The foundation of friendships, pain in the lack of such friendships, positive and negative roles of religion, and the struggle to survive underlay the plot of this novel. This novel was hard to put down. Took me two days to read. Definitely not for kids, but highly recommended. 5/
