4588686
Dear phamily, Thank you for your support. It means so much to me. I will be teaching either 1st or 2nd grade ... no assistant. I"m not sure how many of my students will be English Language Learners ... It is Tulsa Public Schools - which are heavily Hispanic ... but the diversity breakdown of my school shows 20% for five different groups (white, black, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian) So who knows? That is a real concern of mine. Especially since I speak NO Spanish. My managing teacher signed off on my student teacher record today ... she said she is "not afraid to send me into the future" ... kept expecting Michael J. Fox to appear with a souped up Delorean .. but no. My management is good. They are all in line. But my lessons are boring, soul-sucking things. I get to go home for a week and then when I come back the crud really hits the fan, and I'm responsible for my own classroom .... oh, doom. But it WILL BE FINE!!! I realized yesterday that I am homesick. It's weird ... I've lived away from home before, and it wasn't a big deal. So this emotion was new to me and I didn't know what it was ... but just realizing what it was was such a relief, and I feel SO much better. P.S. Iggy you are a wise woman and 100% right - one of the 1st things I did was make Sr. Bernadette SCC pray for me. Powerful prayers+ teacher advice = vunderful. Which is why I love/need my phatmass phamily too
Since you never explicitly rejected my offer for either myself or Winchester to threaten your students with physical violence I'll take that as an indication of tacit approval.
Actually today I wrote on the wipeboard with a sharpie marker. This is not the first time. I also did it in the first minute of my very first lesson ever - which you can imagine was a tranquil, happy way to launch my career in education. So basically while I am not ruling out corporal punishment for the kids (they still have that option available you know) I would actually request one or both of you roundhouse kick me in the face if I ever put my hand near a sharpie marker again. Lilllabettt
they respect me because I use the "teacher face." Although it is somewhat sad to me - they gave the kids these "surveys about your teacher", and the other teachers got answers about how nice they are --- every last one of my students mentioned "she moves our names down when we don't listen" (we have a behavior traffic light, when they mess up they go from green to yellow to red) Even I would not like me. I make them sit with their hands folded on their desks. Supposedly that is the optimal position for listening so thats how I make them sit! But I know as a student that would annoy me ... they are quiet and learn a lot. But when I observe other classrooms, they are noisy and seem more fun. Cute thing happened today: One of the kids is a very talkative little boy; he always has his hand raised, wanting to tell me a story. Sometimes he doesn't raise his hand, and that means moving down on the behavior traffic light. Today I brought him back from lunch early, so that he could write an apology letter to the class. I was reminding him why he's in trouble. While I was speaking, I rested my chin on my hand. And he saw that and looked up and said: "Are you tired, my beauty?" - not in a smart, talk back way but in a cute, repeating a movie line way .. It was all I could do to maintain my teacher face but i had to because he was in trouble. Today one of my co-workers found herself telling a first grader: "you can choose a consequence or you can choose to stop saying 'mushy mud pie'"

Lilllabettt
I'm confused. Have you gotten to your assignment in Oklahoma already?
No .... before school starts in the Fall, we have to do training. It's called "Institute" - which is the 5 weeks of no sleep, lots of criticism, people wailing, crying, vaguely suicidal, etc. During Institute, they send us through a crash course of accelerated classes for half the day. During the other half, we do student-teaching ... we lead a class of summer school students. Its good for them, because they can avoid having to be held back a grade in the fall, and we get to practice behavior management, execution, assessments, grading, tracking, all that jazz while a veteran teacher sits in the back of the room and watches to make sure we don't kill anyone. After that there's more classes, and then home for dinner and lesson planning. I'll be in Oklahoma in a week ... eek.

Archaeology cat
I had a student who could make me lose the teacher face quite easily. He was just too cute to stay upset with him, even when he was causing trouble. I have some friends in Tulsa, Lillla. I'll see if I can send you their contact info if you want. BG45
I know the word "execution" wasn't meant in this sense, but I had a mental image of, "You will do your homework, or you will serve on the firing line". I read way too much Warhammer 40k.

Mom tends to get a death threat from her second graders at least once a year. I'm not exaggerating. The classroom assignments are "totally randomized", but somehow for three years in a row she's gotten almost entire classroom loads of behavioral disorder students while everyone else gets 2-3.
