An Honest And Civil Discussion On The Modesty & Bikinis

I work at a pool and see a lot of swimsuits that are decidedly immodest (in which category I tend to place bikinis) at the least and often downright disturbing that anyone would wear them in public . . but that being said there are also very nice moderate options. Look for sporty-ish types. There are a lot of nice tankinis out there, but I usually end up haphazardly throwing together to very un-matching one piece and surf shorts. But it works :)

Those skirt bathing suits look just like a nighty for hubby in the bedroom. And who would wear that in public? This boggles my mind... :idontknow:

I agree with you there.

I feel especially sorry for the men who are striving to be pure but then go swimming where a lot of if not all of the women around them are in bikinis. They struggle too. To think that there was a time when men and women would swim in separate pools.

With the nighty up above, I think people are thinking "it's MORE, so it's better." But compared to barely anything, yeah... But it's still like a nighty, which compared to a long skirt to the ankles, wow, that's a lot revealed.

I've seen some kids and women wearing skirts that short in stores, and immediately it looks way too revealing. But people think differently when they shop for the beach.

And to continue what I mentioned earlier, believe me, if Ryan Gosling was walking around shirtless, I would be tempted to look some.

question to add on to this thread....

Is the answer to Modesty really only putting more clothes on?

Lots of tones of Puritanicalism, I feel like are running through this thread....

I have had, and still at times have issues with scrupulousity. So, that's part of it.

It does seem reasonable to wear capris and a t-shirt to the beach (in a bathing material).

It seems reasonable to me to wear a modest one piece or modest tankini.

what boggles my mind is when hundreds of women march in cities wearing bikinis, tight tank tops and tight shorts to protest sex crimes ... Houston had their "Slutwalk" today (sooooo stupid!!!)

...also, I was at a Canyon Lake gas station when two women drove up to fill up their car. Both came out wearing nothing but their little itty bikinis. I felt like calling the cops to arrest them for "indecent exposure..." I think bikinis are disgusting as they are less than panties and a bra ... at least wear something over those two pieces of string when you are no where near the beach!

Like ThePenciledOne said, modesty is so much more than putting more clothes on. I would say, though, that wearing a bikini can be an outward reflection of immodesty in the heart- wanting men to notice them- and not in a pure way.

A note on the swimdress thought: first, it might help to consider that not all people go swimming in the same places. I live in the rural Midwest where beaches are basically non-existant, and I find public pools gross. So the only places I go swimming are pool at friends' homes/apartments. I am usually swimming with just one or two people, and they are almost exclusively women. That's why modesty isn't just a clothes issue, isn't just a 'protecting men from impure thoughts' issue. By dressing modestly even when men aren't a concern, I'm putting value on my body as a temple of the Holy Spirit.

The main reason I liked the swimdress concept was the awkward shifting/moving problem that regular swimsuit bottoms sometimes present. (sorry if that was a little graphic). Otherwise, I would say a regular swimsuit/tankini would work- and probably does for most people,

Or it could be more comfortable...I mean I know the issue of men 'putting a shirt' on has been brought up (which to be honest I think is a total joke), but for me during the summer it's comfortable to manage the heat for my body without a shirt.

Another something to note is that tribal cultures definitely do not have the most modest garments at least in the warmer climates, yet they do fine right? It's the mentality that pervades our current culture of Use verses Love that makes us put modesty in sometimes an overemphasis.

The only time I see men needing to wear a shirt when swimming is if they're really musculuar and well built. I know from personal experience and from how other girls react that this is seen as sexy.

In my opinion, in the bedroom with my imaginable husband, yes. But in public? Ouch.

I'm sorry, but I respectfully disagree. I'm of the opinion that modest one pieces are fine. I wouldn't be able to afford swimwear that you mentioned and my mom was the one who bought the bathing suit I currently own. Before that, I had another for about 10 years. Both are swimdresses.

I try not to be so scrupulous about these things. Bikinis are one thing, but I would much rather see more women in a modest one piece. It doesn't need to be taken to the extreme unless the individual person prefers to wear a body suit. ;)
