dUSt
There is definitely a double standard, because I have been known to refer to certain men as "hawt" (perhaps even on Phatmass)
And I am humbly honored by it, thank you. Seven77
I am married guy who thinks that words change so much it hardly makes a difference these days, its not like we are using Latin. I guess calling women fervens would not seem so bad if an old latin scholar seen either a cute girl or one that was actually on fire. By the way cute can be used to describe puppies, seals and cabbage patch dolls does this mean it can be deemed as being used to describe an object? ed
Words are more powerful than we realize even if they are just social conventions. Hot, if used to describe a person's looks, means the same thing no matter what language it is translated into--the idea is the same. I think the heart of the matter is that the word hot has to do with sensation… it seems to me that referring to a woman as "hot" is like saying this woman evokes arousal in me. In my estimation, "hot" is not just describing a person but it is also describing how that person makes one feel sexually… I think that this is the problem. The problem is not just that we are reducing somebody to an object but is that we are a reducing somebody to a sexual object. Words like "cute" and "pretty" and "beautiful" do not have this intrinsic connotation....
Totus Tuus
so you're saying that general statements like "modest is hottest," etc would be okay to use?
Yeah, that, and being more specific doesn't bother me if it's clear that the guy is trying to compliment someone, or something along those lines, and not trying to be degrading. Ash Wednesday
Depends on the tone and usage. Probably not appropriate or modest from perspective of the average guy describing a girl, contextually it usually means more than just calling someone attractive and pretty. My lady friends and I have probably said something like that in passing as a joke to each other when getting ready to go out or something, and it's fine between hubby and wife (though I usually call my husband "cutie" more often than anything) :D Edited July 9, 2011 by Ash Wednesday
Amppax
The word "hot" should not be used by any man over 19.
