HopefulBride
Oh, I don't know about that. Sure, it doesn't immediately scream "church" when one looks at it...but at least it's not "Christ, Hope of the World Church" in Vienna. SuscipeMeDomine
That aside, how can you have a diocese with no cathedral?
They have a cathedral called Christ Our Savior: http://www.christoursaviorcathedral.net/ It's nothing special. I assume it was a parish church until the diocese was split off from Los Angeles in 1976. They've had plans underway for several years to build a new cathedral. I believe they're currently raising funds which I suppose could go to purchasing the Crystal Cathedral.

Ed Normile
Spectacular? No. Qualify for "Ugly as Sin" probably. I could see this being a modernist opera hall or theater, but not a Church. It looks like it belongs in the Wizard of Oz. IgnatiusofLoyola
The Catholics could use the Crystal Cathedral as a device for converting people. "If you remain a Protestant, you will eventually think buildings like this are tasteful. The sooner you become Catholic, the better." Then show them a picture of St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. "See, this is what Catholics think is beautiful." Personally, I think Disney should buy it and move it to Disney World (where they have extra room--Disneyland is pretty crowded). People who like that sort of thing could dress up like Snow White and get married there.

Nihil Obstat
While I think the diocese could do better with building their own more traditional cathedral, there is something that appeals to me about the Catholic Church taking over formerly Protestant owned buildings.

To that point, I could see buying the property, tearing it down, and building something proper.
My thoughts exactly. We should buy up as many Protestant properties as we can and tear down their ugly buildings, then replace it with something Catholic and attractive. Like Gothic or Baroque or the better Cistercian (because some of the stranger versions of Cistercian are borderline heretical).
