OnlySunshine
I mainly get my entertainment off-television, either online or by DVD/tape. It's mainly because most of the shows I like (Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Alvin and the Chipmunks (the cartoons, of course), El Tigre) don't air anymore, but it's also nice to control basically every aspect of what I watch. Television-wise, Phineas and Ferb is pretty amesome. Most of the "adult references/jokes" are just references to older things (movies, people) that kids probably wouldn't know much about because it was before their time. And the protagonists are just so completely genuinely good-hearted. There's some violence every now and then, but I don't think a platypus secret agent beating up a mad scientist is very easy to imitate. But Kick Buttowski: Suburban Daredevil is one of my favorite shows ever so I'm not sure how valid my opinion on children's entertainment is.
I still remember Saturday mornings watching Looney Tunes with my little sister and dad. My favorite was and will always be Bugs Bunny. tinytherese
What I find disturbing is how sexual references are so easily found in movies that appear to be for children like the last two Ice Age films, Happy Feet, and Monsters vs Aliens (just to name a few.) Most of the references don't even do anything for the plot. Were those just planted in there for the parents who take their kids to see this films or what? I know that I've gotten made fun of before for liking what may be described as children's films like from the Old School Disney Days like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, etc. Just because it is made by Disney or is animated doesn't mean that it is unintelligent or for small children for that matter. Just look at The Simpsons or Family Guy. They're cartoons. My brother, who is only 9 years old has been exposed to a lot of stuff in the media that he is definitely too young for. If he were properly catechized and say ten years older, he might watch the movies that he has been known to see and realize how little substance there actually are in them and even if they do have substance to them, he could even evaluate what he watches intelligently. Last week, he watched two of the Austin Powers films, which are basically sex comedies that get kicks out of using crude words to describe and name private parts. Why my parents let him watch that I don't know. My mom and I were talking about how awful sitcomes are today and not just from a moral standpoint, but entertainment wise. Some sitcomes don't even last more than a season because viewers weren't interested. Some of the same hair-brained schemes (some of which are just plain lame) that we all know won't be able to be pulled off keep being done. It was done decades ago on I Love Lucy people and did she get away with it? Nooo! And sometimes the acting or personality traits of the characters are just so unbelievable. I miss old school nineties ish Nickelodeon and Nick at Night. Spongebob Squarepants and iCarly are so unintelligent, yet Nickelodeon plays them I don't know how many times a day. During the times that I've had to watch my little brother or when he just hangs around, oh those shows just turn my mind into mush. Whatever happened to the original All That (not the crummy new show that came back years after the other one was no longer on with new characters,) Rugrats, Hey Arnold, and Doug? Those are the shows that I grew up with.
