Casey Anthony

I just read an interesting opinion piece arguing that Nancy Grace made Casey Anthony's acquittal possible by bringing the case to media attention which made it possible for Anthony to get a lawyer who could win the case. Without the media attention, it would have just been another random trial and Anthony was neither rich nor famous, so she may not have gotten the same winning defense.

Although I am praying for her soul, I really hope she doesn't have another child, because I have a feeling we'll be having this same discussion in the future if she does!

I don't think so. Perhaps my judgment is off because it took place in my backyard, but this has been raging since way before Nancy Grace was talking about it. Orlando has been abuzz with this for years and years now. So much so that they had to bus in jurors from other parts of the state in the hopes that they had not be saturated in the same way that we, in Central Florida, had.

Yeah, I was in FL the summer that Caylee went missing. It was pretty much a media frenzy from the get-go, there. I agree that it was a big deal long before Nancy Grace talked about it.

Interesting... but I also just read this on yahoo today...
An unlikely lead defender. Anthony's heretofore little-known lead attorney, Jose Baez, is a former bikini salesman who had been barred from practicing law for eight years f0r failing to pay child support and secure insurance for his children. He has quickly gone from a financially troubled rookie local lawyer to pulling off what some are calling the biggest legal upset since O.J. Simpson walked free.

TV host Nancy Grace called him "incompetent" in her coverage of the trial (she hasn't apologized for that, saying the "devil is dancing" at the verdict), and legal experts told ABC News that it seemed at times as though Baez were improvising and overwhelmed in the courtroom at times. Baez, a Navy veteran, had only been practicing as a lawyer for three years before Anthony heard other inmates talking about him and requested that he represent her.
Not exactly some high profile lawyer.

Well he's pretty high-profile now! And I'd bet that he never has to try another case, having secured a career in books and speeches as a result of this victory.

I was at the gym yesterday when this press conference was held. I got so upset by the look of smug satisfaction and utterly-fake solemnity on his face, that I had to get off the treadmill and say a prayer. The man could barely hold back that grin...

Watching the news reports, people keep saying that the jury must not have seen the same trial the rest of us did. That's the thing. Juries don't see the entire trial. They don't get to see arguments on admissibility. They don't get to hear expert opinions on the news. They are only allowed to see that slice of evidence and testimony that is admissible.

It's tough but on the other hand if they were allowed to see, hear and read whatever anyone was saying, then biases would run rampant. Sometimes you can't expect a juror who doesn't have particular expertise in a field to have something that might make them immune to bad arguments and conspiracy theories. Emotions are also at play and they can make things worse if cleverly manipulated...mob hysteria is usually the result. Some are highly susceptible to being influenced for all the wrong reasons.

Double edged sword.

I was once accused of manipulating a jury. During a summation, I accidentally tripped into the jury box, dangling over the rail head first. Almost got a mistrial.

Really? Wow.

I was watching some clips of two people who were arrested and made to serve time in prison during the trial for contempt of court (one for blurting out that the mother was the killer and another flipping the prosecutor off). I'm glad that such rigid rules only apply in a trial.

Reading the review, definitely looks like one of those rather uncommon and interesting autobiographical stories, but $$$s are lacking in my world :sad2:.

I'm going to bookmark it though.

(CatherineM, I didn't know you were a lawyer :smokey:)

She's basically knows everything, and has done almost everything. Seriously. She always has an amesome story about pretty much any topic that can come up. It's crazy.
