Cherie
So my boyfriend just moved to Missouri to begin a master's degree program. He's in the heart of what he calls "Baptist Country." He was raised Catholic, and recently returned to the Church. I was wondering if any of you have some suggestions for a housewarming Catholic care package, particularly for a new apartment?
Everyone has some great suggestions, but I just want to say it's totally sweet you're sending him a Catholic care package.
Basilisa Marie
Thank you so much everyone! You guys are amesome! I think I'll send him a little of everything. He's got a Bible (going to a Catholic university for undergrad made that a requirement) and a few rosaries (including one of my good ones that he somehow snuck off with...) and a small crucifix (again...this one "fell off the wall" of his dorm room and just "landed" in his boxes). I'll send him some of that coffee (and they have tea!) and look at a few other things. I think I'll send him Amy Welborn's "Prove It: Church" book. It's geared towards teens, but she wrote it with an audience of teens talking with fundies in mind, so I think it'll be perfect if he ever needs ammo in an awkward conversation. Luckily he's a biology student, but you never know. Oh and a catechism! Almost forgot that. @Luigi: He's in Kirksville, so really up north MO. He was a bit disappointed that all the Protestant churches in town have beautiful buildings and the Catholic church was a bit...dilapidated. @Cherie: Awww, thanks!! Yeah, I think he's pretty amesome. I was just so excited when he finally decided to come back to the Church, that I want to keep encouraging him. Luigi
" and a few rosaries (including one of my good ones that he somehow snuck off with..." Mary doesn't listen to prayers said with stolen rosaries.... does she? You can tell him that, anyway.

It must be older than all the Protestant churches. 'Cause Catholics got there first!
Tell him to keep that to himself. He can read about 'em in the paper, and he can support 'em if they get to the playoffs and World Series - unless they're in the series against the Redbirds. In that case, he absolutely must keep his mouth shut in public. Otherwise, they'll probably stone him in the quadrangle. Just sayin'. MargaretTeresa
A Bible, a rosary, a crucifix, a reference book on Catholicism - like a dictionary of Catholicism. And sign him up for a subscription to the local Catholic newspaper - it'll have all sorts of information about local churches, Masses, Catholic activities, and resources. It also depends on where in Missouri he's going. The big cities - St. Louis & Kansas City - are heavily Catholic. They have monasteries, Catholic schools, Catholic hospitals, various religious orders, etc. The smaller cities tend to be more heavily Baptist, but Springfield has a strong Catholic presence (it's a diocese, with a co-cathedral - the other co-cathedral is in Cape Girardeau), Jefferson City is a diocese with a cathedral. The towns tend to be more heavily Baptist, but they don't usually ahve colleges in them. And many of the small towns have a Catholic church - usually named Sacred Heart or Immaculate Conception, or perhaps named after a German saint. He'll be fine.
My town's Catholic church is St Henry's. Pretty sure that's not German. ETA: or maybe it is. Just looked it up. The first church in our town/county (a Catholic one!) was founded by German Catholics. Now our church somehow has quite a few Lebanese.
