Azriel
From my Grandmother, may she rest in peace ... At 83: "I don't know why I keep waking up. I'm ready to go home already. I must still have something God wants me to do." I always found that pretty darn profound.
Maximilianus
From my parents; "El camaron que se duerme se lo lleva la corriente(the crayfish/shrimp that sleep is taken by the current)" and "no te duermas en las pajas(don't sleep in the hay)" both basically meaning "you snooze you loose" in other words don't procrastinate/be lazy. Edited July 11, 2011 by Maximilianus
MissScripture
From my Grandmother, may she rest in peace ... At 83: "I don't know why I keep waking up. I'm ready to go home already. I must still have something God wants me to do." I always found that pretty darn profound.
I always thought the story of Pope John Paul II was really amazing, because he had so many brushes with death, but didn't die, and you can see how God had great things planned for him. Then, last year, we found out I had an inch and a half hole in my heart that had never really profoundly affected me before that (other than me having really bad endurance) and I did a million things that could've killed me because of it. Then, when I went to have the operation to fix it, my heart stopped and they had to shock it back into beating. And it's really crazy to think I really have had a lot of brushes with death, but I'm still here, so God must have some plans for me, too. But that whole experience was definitely the biggest life lesson for me, learning that no matter how much I wanted to be and pretended to be, I was never really the one in charge of my life. , And it's really wonderful to be able to say, "If I wake up after this operation, that's wonderful, but if I don't, that's wonderful, too." And I've learned since then, that you really have to remember those life lessons, and that's not something that comes automatically!
BG45
Amen. I used to have really bad sleep apnea, which wasn't diagnosed until I was 21. When I finally had my sleep study, I'd only been asleep for two hours when they woke me up to put the breathing machine on me because I'd stopped breathing over a hundred times. I didn't realize that the very act of sleeping was almost killing me, literally. After the tonsils were taken out and some weight lost, I've actually slept well and not had near as bad as problem. Sadly, I didn't even know I'd been sleeping poorly for 21 years, I thought you were supposed to wake up tired and be groggy all day!

I didn't know you weren't supposed to have tingly hands and feet when you finished exercising! I didn't know you weren't supposed to have trouble breathing when you were in the water. On the bright side, I'm pretty sure that it was part of why I had been able to literally eat whatever I wanted and never gained weight. My poor little heart was getting a workout just doing the normal tasks!

Vincent Vega
Here's one from my old man: "There are two ways to learn things: the easy way or the hard way." In recent years, I've taken to mentioning an addedum - that the hard way usually isn't as fun, but that it generally sticks with you for longer. MissScripture
Sometimes it's worth it to take the detour. You may not get to where you want to be as soon, but it can be a lot more fun.
dominicansoul
"when you dive into the deep, be prepared to drown ..." "never wish for anything, this way, when you don't get it, you won't be disappointed..." both are mine
