Richard McBrien versus Fr. Z.

I would totally pay to see those bouts. Pay-per-view Phatmass?

actually, those would be great. they could probably play nicer and be more mature than some people can be. (i'm not speaking about you, L_D, just to be clear.)

hahahaha. I fully embrace my lack of maturity and civility. No worries.

I'd pay too. We should go into business together and start a program that airs these debates. :like3: I bet EWTN would pick it up.

Iunno. Hans Kung gets pretty petty and whiny. I can't speak about the rest because I haven't read their stuff.

Wow. Sounds like a major change of pace for EWTN. After having been lullabied by the rosary, stations of hte cross, and daily Mass, we now bring you The Ultimate Showdown of Professional Catholics. Rated PG-13.

Hans Kung versus Cardinal Burke

I'm pretty sure that would cause a nuclear reaction.

And no, I've never once, not ever, ever, never, ever, said that I am better or than anyone else was worse than me. I haven't memorized the documents, I have them all saved in my favorites because I use them alot. I don't want you to compete, I want you to understand, learn and teach...you're a Church Scholar here, you should be doing all of those things....

the bolded part comes off very condescending. you do realize that CathM is going to school to get more edjumacated, right? (I can't remember what exactly.) She's pretty dang smart, even with a brain injury. in fact, i usually find her charitable posts very helpful and i learn a lot from her.

edited for information, because it was bugging me. from the Q&A phorum:
CatherineM also known as Catherine Mardon has a Bachelors of Science in Agriculture (Forestry) from Oklahoma State University, a Juris Doctor from the University of Oklahoma College of Law, and a Bachelors of Art in Pastoral Ministry from Newman University in Wichita, Kansas. She is currently working on a Masters in Theological Studies degree from Newman Theological College in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Her specialties are in the area of Moral Theology, Canon Law, and liturgical vestments. Her legal practice included tribunal work, mediation, death penalty appeals, and a variety of low income concerns. She worked extensively in a rural crisis ministry, with ecumenical organizations, the homeless, and as a speaker on social justice issues. After being forced into early retirement due to a disability, she raised foster children, and is currently married to Austin, an advocate for the mentally ill. When she isn’t sitting in classes with seminarians half her age, she enjoys sewing, singing, water aerobics, and disc golf. She teaches in the RCIA program, serves on a provincial Human Trafficking Commission, and recently had her first book published.
This reminds me of high school. We always wanted a showdown between our ultra-liberal "Faith Formation Coordinator" and our conservative, very Catholic History teacher. We were thinking a small room with 2 metal folding chairs and a single light bulb hanging down. It would've been hilarious.

Well, if you do make a new Cath vs Cath debate board for those entrusted with the title, Church Militant, then I'd like to request said honorary certificates.

I'd also like to point out that a lot of times when the debates happen, users will end up calling names and pointing to character flaws, rather than argument flaws. Perhaps you could do #1 and #2 - try out the board for a while, and at the same time ensure that both sides of an argument are warned when uncharitable remarks are thrown around.

I think you're right; it does present the opportunity for scandal. It also brings down the entire demeanor of the board. I'll try to be more careful to avoid this in the future.

Unfortunately, it *will* keep coming up, because religion is one of those topics.....

So...what difference do a bunch of parchment papers make?

I have multiple degrees too, but I am still going to implore those around me to understand, learn and teach...I expect the same from not only her, but everyone else here, including myself, but I was addressing her, in a specific instance.

It wasn't condescending, it was a reminder from one Scholar to another...even if I don't have the tag right now.

(I know you don't like me much, but could you please lay off the constant criticism....I'm trying my best to make amends without compromising my principles...kthanxbai)

It was condescending. And a reminder like that should have been done in a pm.

And since you constantly make a big deal out of your degrees and travel and passports etc etc ad nauseum, YOU tell me why a bunch of parchment papers matter.

Constant criticism? You ain't seen nuthin' yet.
kthxbai.
