Debra Little
Does the Bishop have something against your Confessors? He takes away every single one you get close to...and then leaves you with the one you're not. And yeah, I think to an extent we all suffer with what Luigi pointed out in regards to the Mass. My biggest distraction is when people turn to glare angrily at kids for crying; I'm used to crying kids, they don't bug me. Christ even said to suffer the children and let the children come unto Him. But when people turn to glare at them angrily...heh. That and "Person X would be complaining about Y that's happening liturgically right now. Why am I giving that time and thought? I should be paying attention."
My biggest irritation at Mass is people talking and being noisy, when they come in or otherwise. Constant fiddling and moving around, of which part I am also guilty and trying to make myself learn to sit still. It drives me nuts to be still and that's just part of my personality so I have to work hard at it. In prayer especially I really want to learn just how to sit in God's presence and just love Him. I love Him but I feel like I'm not doing anything when I'm being silent. I know I don't have to carry on the conversation here but I talk to much and it's very frustrating. Debra Little
I'm getting by. Desperate people do desperate things, right? Phone calls and visits to campus now and then to visit the chaplain are helping. And on the bright side, Monsignor finally knows my name. Thanks for asking. One of these days, I'll find someone who isn't going to bail. Or move. Or otherwise fall off the face of the earth. I'm cursed...
Thank Him for your cross. It will be easier to carry. BG45
Thanks for posting this. It seems like when we discuss homilies around here, it is only the bad ones. I hear great homilies every week, but rarely talk about them.
Glad to. I was just so blown away I had to share!
Awe[s][/s]some bro!
Thanks, it so was! Also like how you got around the fiddler.
Mass today was pretty edifying. I can't even explain why really, just felt spiritually uplifted for the first time in forever. Maybe the feast of the Holy Trinity is my day. lol.
Hey it could be!! Glad you felt so uplifted though!
The priest at Mass today gave a talk on the same subject. I thought it was really beautiful. This is a portion of it:
I love your priest. That quote is amazing and so very true and humbling!
I catch myself sometimes making the sign of the Cross too quickly. So I stop and think and do it over again more slowly. I found out it it really helps if I say the words while I am doing it. That forces me to think about what I am doing. When I converted this became my favorite thing to do.
Ditto here, especially when people are waiting to get into the pew behind me. Then it becomes "Did I just put people ahead of God?" I'll have to try saying the words out loud next time, it sounds like it could help me too maybe!
Yeah that can be really hard, especially during seasons like Lent and Advent I think. I know our parish puts in the bulletin to please respect the silence during those two periods of the liturgical year, but the talking and such keeps on going and going. Then at about one minute until Mass starts, a sudden hush falls throughout the room. I actually don't bring a watch to Mass because the hush is so accurate! On the prayer front, I think almost all of us have that problem to an extent. It's difficult to carry on a conversation where you're probably going to be the only audible participant. BG45
Father W. is on a roll. In this diocese, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi is moved to Sunday, so at tonight's vigil Mass he spent his homily doing a catechesis on what we actually believe about the Eucharist. Going into the Greek of tonight's Gospel reading. Pointing out that so few people kneel or bow before receiving Christ in the Eucharist, and explaining why we should. Plus the Real Presence galore! He also went on about how we should be in a state of Grace before receiving and were called to examine our conscience. At one point in the homily I heard someone mutter, "What is this bull****?". We use a substantial host, and that came up in the homily too. Father was called in before the Bishop and the Vicar General this week over a scathing letter that declared him a blasphemer and heretic, accusing him of desecrating the Eucharist at length over....yeast. The Bishop asked him what was in the substantial host, just for formality's sake, "Water and flour". End of story. The woman from another part of Pennsylvania assumed since it was bread instead of the pre-packaged stuff that it had yeast and was therefore an illicit Eucharist. Now at this point, a lot of people would scoff at her mistake and such, but instead he just paused and said, "At first I was shocked and angry, but then after a bit, I at least appreciated that she cared that much about our Lord's Body." faithcecelia
Forgive my ignorance, but could you please tell me exactly what a 'substantial host' is? Its not a term I am familiar with, thanks.
BG45
Not one I'd heard before coming here either! So if you have to apologize for ignorance, then so do I! It's the actual use of bread instead of the pre-packaged wafers for the Eucharistic Host; granted bread that has to be cooked to the Church's specifications of just flour and water and nothing else. BG45
Not a problem, I should've explained it earlier since I hadn't known before coming here!
