Era Might
Christians need to stop turning each other into celebrities. I don't care if it's a priest. Or rather, especially if it's a priest. If you're a priest and you've got something to sell in the name of the Gospel, and you have "fans" who are buying what you're selling (literally buying), then something's wrong. I never listened to Fr. Corapi much, but the few times I did he never struck me the right way. He came across to me as being all about him: his charisma, his story, his "effectiveness" as a preacher, his tough talk and appeal to church ladies and fawning faithful. I'm not talking about merely being known. The Saints are often well-known. But I can't imagine Padre Pio or St. John of the Cross hawking books and CDs for sale. I mean, in this new message Corapi mentions that he's publishing an autobiography. I bet he ain't gonna be giving it away. And now he's going to expand his fanbase (oops, I mean "broaden his audience")? Gimme a break. I don't know if Corapi is guilty or innocent. We'll see how how he goes on from here. You will know a tree by its fruits. But regardless of whether he is guilty or innocent, he needs a reality check. All Christians need a reality check. Just because Corapi was a "Catholic" televangelist doesn't make him any less questionable than anyone else in the televangelism industry. The whole American megachurch culture usually revolves around a particular minister and the cult of celebrity around him. I don't wish Corapi anything bad. I hope he is innocent and I hope some good will come out of this, and there probably are real problems with the church's process of investigating accused priests. But when someone like Corapi is being investigated, I feel the way I feel when two Hollywood celebrities get married. I don't hold my breath to see it end well. Noel's angel
Fr Z is a toot. Anyway, I don't mean this in a bad way, but I started to have reservations about Fr Corapi when he started dying his beard and eyebrows jet black.

abrideofChrist
Agreed, which is why we really do have to wait and see what develops. We do not know what the true picture is at the moment (did he apply for laicization?, is it being forced on him and he knows it, or does he realize he'd be in clerical limbo land for the rest of his life and think he'd be more effective accepting that and moving on to asking for a dispensation from vows...) because there is no official statement yet. It will probably be cleared up soon, as bishops typically circulate the priest's canonical status for the benefit of the faithful and other bishops. Again, there have been accusations that he's left the Church. We simply do not know and will not know until the bishop releases the public statement. Under the current system, all it takes is one accusation (true or false, doesn't matter) to forever keep you from active ministry again. This is the very real risk our seminarians take and anyone who gets ordained, because of the flawed process we have right now.
If he is wrongly accused, which I suspect, I can certainly understand the righteous anger. Priests who are accused, innocent or guilty, have no rights in the system. That has always concerned me.

cmotherofpirl
Good, who wants to participate? Two are even better than one. I also think we should invoke the prayers of John Paul the Great as well. Any ideas for that one?
