Closed Threads

Wow! If they keep closing threads around here at the rate we're going, we'll be able to take all the closed threads, weave them into cloth, and make clothes for most of the poor population of the Third World!

NB: This is not an indictment of the mods who close the threads. It is (supposed to be) a sarcastic comment intended to prompt posters to ask themselves why we can't discuss like the intelligent, grown-up, siblings-in-Christ that we claim to be.

To quote Lyndon Johnson, quoting Isaiah: Come, let us reason together.
To quote the IRS: Reasonable people can disagree.

The thought of LBJ being "reasonable" makes me smile

More like "Come, let me tower over you, physically intimidate and verbally assault you into conformity with me."

But we all know that linear reason and rational thought are tools invented by the Dead White Male Patriarchy to oppress the masses! It's a quick and very slippery slope from engaging in rational discussion of ideas to falling prey to Evil Oppressive Right-wing ideas. And the most sure-fire way to keep such ideas from invading your brain is to keep your mind immune from having any actual ideas at all.

To avoid being brainwashed by Evil Conservative Fascists, the best way to prepare for a debate is to engage in a program of lengthy mental preparation.
This is best accomplished by long sessions in front of the Television. Relax, and try not think to much. Let the Television do your thinking for you. Do not try to fight the Television, for the Television is smarter than you. Just sink deep in your easy chair, have a beer, or smoke some substance whose legalization is popular on Phatmass, if that helps relax your brain, and vegetate. Let your eyes glaze over, and drool a little. Let the Enlightenment from the Television just wash over you, and effortlessly fill your brain. Become One with the TV. For politics, anything is fine (but preferably not FOX News - wouldn't want to get brainwashed), but it's best to stick to entertainment program to get Enlightenment, particularly comedy shows like SNL, Stephen Colbert, or the Daily Show. But just sticking to Family Guy and sitcoms will work just as well. Enlightenment is all about absorbing the correct attitudes, and this is done easier if you laugh and don't have to think too much. You can watch some show about aliens on the History Channel if you wish to make yourself feel erudite and learned.

After several hours of Television Enlightenment, you are now ready for debate.
When debating politics, it is absolutely critical to avoid any mention (much less critique) of any actual ideas, policies, or the actual records of the people you are discussing. Instead find some political figure you saw on Television who opposes Dear Leader, or raising the debt ceiling (don't bother worrying about what that is), or otherwise engages in any sort of dissent from what the Television tells you you must think. Such targets are not hard to find - the Television will let you know whom to hate. (But you don't even have to actually see said person on TV to choose him or her - watching an impersonation on an SNL sketch will work just as well - better, actually.)

Next, proceed to make a string of disparaging remarks about said person's physical appearance and intelligence, along with random insulting name callings. The closer the debate resembles a first-grade playground screaming insult match, the better. Also be sure to compare that person to some villain or stupid character on one of your favorite fictional Television programs.
What must be avoided at all costs is any discussion of that person's actual political ideas, proposed policies, or record in office. Such discussion is strictly taboo, unless you are generically denouncing them all as stupid without going into details. Instead, focus your attacks on the person's facial features, style of dress, body, or accent. After all, politics is a beauty contest, and one mustn't get bogged down with the boring brain stuff.

Speaking of brain stuff, the key is to keep relentlessly attacking your opponents' intelligent by constantly repeating ad nauseum how stupid they are. The endless declarations of your opponents' stupidity will prove beyond a doubt your own vastly superior intelligence, and let everyone see what an intellectual you are.
But one mustn't become overly negative in one's tactics. Be sure to take a moment to praise the intelligence of Dear Leader, to show that you are pure of heart.
Just be careful to never, ever discuss any actual ideas or policies, or why they are actually intelligent or stupid.

If your debate opponents try to draw you into a tedious discussion of ideas, you can always counter by accusing them of being brainwashed by FOX News (even if they never watch FOX News.)
Or you cry about how mean, uncharitable, and un-pastoral they are. Whichever you feel like. Just remember to let feeling be your guide, and let the power of the Television flow through you.

The problem with threads that get closed isn't so much that we can't act like grownups, it is because there are some things we will never agree on. Each side believes they are right, and nothing the other side can say will change that. When you know you are right, which I am certain I always am, frustration kicks in. We might as well debate which is better, Star Wars or Star Trek.
