TeresaBenedicta
A little off-topic, but... We used to do a couple of mini family vacations in the summertime and at one Church - Gettysburg maybe, I wish I could remember - the congregation was used to standing when you would normally sit. Or a variation of that, I really wish I could remember. So a bunch of us throughout the Church sat, then quickly stood out of confusion, and the priest laughed and said they did it on purpose to "test" who was a visitor. It was sort of weird.
In both the archdiocese of Seattle and of Portland, the 'norm' is to stand, rather than kneel, after the Agnus Dei. My home parish requested (and was granted) a dispensation from the norm, and continues to kneel as is the universal norm. The same is true for a few other parishes in the area. But the majority stand.
At my parents' parish, it is not mandated by the Bishop, but the one priest usually asks everyone to stay standing, and the other priest usually asks everyone to kneel. But the time the one priest didn't ask everyone to stand, they all kneeled, and the time the other priest didn't ask everyone to kneel, they all stayed standing. Lisa
we might be, after all!
If you are in the Portland area, I visited a small parish in Canby, Oregon for the Saturday evening mass. while the Priest was very quick- I found out later this was because the undefeated Ducks had a game that night, the Mass itself was reverent and I didn't see any abuse of the liturgy. This is it: http://www.stpatcanby.com/ I was only there the one time and can't speak for it as a whole, but it was a good Mass then. Oh my, in my search to find that parish I found this one "Holy Trinity Old Catholic Church... where all baptized Christians are welcome to the Eucharist" ..... starting a new topic on this. Last year I traveled a lot for my job and saw a lot of things that made me shudder and want to do this : It was also the first time I had ever experienced a church without kneelers. I was in the back, and no one explicitly told me otherwise, so I knelt on the floor. It amazes me how someone could not want to kneel at such an important, reverence worthy, and miraculous moment.
