Actual Church Experiences

We are traveling next week and while masstimes.org is useful for finding Catholic Churches, it doesn't give you any indication of how well the Mass is done. So does anyone have any actual Mass experiences in any churches on the Oregon coast, especially around the Eugene area or on the coast like Reedsport or Florence?

I'd go to the St. Thomas More Newman Center in Eugene, connected with the University of Oregon. They're staffed by Dominicans, and I've only heard good things. Otherwise you're likely taking a gamble hitting up any of the parishes. We are the "atheist capital of the world" as my s/d loves to remind me.

Or I'd suggest St. Mary Catholic Church in Eugene. I have no personal experience at this parish, but their website says this: "We are a Eucharistic community committed to the sacred traditional liturgy, music, and sacraments of the Roman Catholic faith." So I'd wager a good bet that they're pretty solid as well.

You coming to the Portland area during your travels at all? ;)

I called a friend from church whose daughter lives there. She goes to St. Mary's when she is there. I looked at the Website and they use the word Tradition as the first of their core values. There's also a Ukrainian Catholic Church there, so that could be fun.

Ash Wednesday

The last time I was at a church in Oregon it was really modern, liberal and northwest-y looking. The priest gestured with his arms and said "Jeee-zus" in a deep voice and someone in front of us had some kind of stroke or heart attack in mass. I don't know whether or not they were OK. The whole thing was a little weird.

If western Oregon is anything like western Washington, you might have to put up with some fruitcake stuff.

Truth.

We're in a bad shape out here. BUT. There are a number of good, solid parishes. Thanks be to God.

That is what I am hoping to avoid. We are going to a smaller town south of Eugene, but I figured that I would have a better chance of Eugene having something better. CathM, where did you see about the Ukrainian church?

Yeah, usually the smaller the town, the more wacked you might the liturgy.

If you want to make a day trip up to Portland, there's an AVVESOME Dominican priory ;)

Ash Wednesday

If you pass through Albany, there's an outstanding Hungarian restaurant called Novaks.

Aw, that's too bad! I live in Camas (does your brother go to St. Thomas- that's my home parish!), Washougal is something of our rival

My friend is Ukrainian. Lots of them here. She said she had been there for a wedding. It's called the nativity of the mother of God. I think there's also a Eritrean church somewhere in Oregon because the pastor of the Eritrean church that uses our church used to be there. That service is definitely interesting.

HisChildForever

A little off-topic, but...

We used to do a couple of mini family vacations in the summertime and at one Church - Gettysburg maybe, I wish I could remember - the congregation was used to standing when you would normally sit. Or a variation of that, I really wish I could remember. So a bunch of us throughout the Church sat, then quickly stood out of confusion, and the priest laughed and said they did it on purpose to "test" who was a visitor. It was sort of weird.
