I've never seen men's habits made shorter (like we do with women's). Looking at the picture, you see the sisters' habits are a few inches shorter. I wonder if practicality really has much to do with it at all... in fact, I imagine men doing more crazy things that might be obstructed by a longer habit. Granted, I also can't imagine men wearing a modified habit.

At Q the habit tended to get shorter as the sister got older. My first NM, a few months after I entered, reluctantly decided to shorten hers. She was sacristan and so up and down the stairs all the time withthings in her hands and was worried about tripping (she came close a number of times). [/quote] That's my guess. For reasons I do not understand at all, men's communities seem to vary quite a bit in how often they wear their habits/clerical garb. Women's communities tend to be more all-or-nothing. But given that all-or-nothing that seems to be common for women, it makes sense to me that more women's communities have modified theirs more, or a "this pin is our habit" sort of thing, whereas you almost never see that for men's communities -- even those that would be considered roughly equivalently "progressive."
