OnlySunshine
Well I'm starting to run out of ideas. If you are between 18 and 22, you could try Airtran U.
Nope, don't qualify. I turn 28 next month.
Are you using airline comparison sites?
Yep. I must have thought of everything. That stinks. Roamin Catholic
I would caution against using priceline for Airfare. You get to pick the days that you are flying on, but have no say on the time, so you may end up with a 5am departure leaving and then a red-eye or something like that on the way back.. Now, for hotel rooms; its great. I got a 3* hotel that is normally $110 per night for only $50 per night...I just caution about using it for airfare, unless you don't care about what time you arrive/depart. MIKolbe
try Ontario Airport... it is about 90 miles outside of LA, but the airfare is normally cheaper...
MIKolbe
whoops..nvrmnd.. i just read about cabfare (i assumed you were renting a car) sorry...
MIKolbe
also, whatever hotel you stay at, see if they have a shuttle service... many times it is free or is at least cheaper than cabfare....
OnlySunshine
Well, thank you everyone. My mom booked our flights on Orbitz. I really wished she hadn't but she did it at work, so I had no say-so. I have heard bad things about Orbitz, so I'm just praying everything goes well--including us being seated together. We can't pick our seats until we get to the airport. I really don't know why she did this. I've always flown AirTran, and that's the airline we are taking. I don't think the prices she got were any cheaper either. Please say some prayers. We will be leaving on on the third week in July. I'm excited but also nervous about the trip. Apparently, the hotel we are staying at does have shuttles to and from the airport and, fortunately, it is next to the hospital where my mom is having the tests, so we won't have to worry about renting a car or paying for cab fare. I figured out how by finding the airline confirmation number and then going on the AirTran website. The only problem is that I have to pay $24 for reserving seats. I'll have to wait til my mom comes home. Edited June 15, 2011 by MaterMisericordiae
OnlySunshine
Ok, so we have our seats reserved, thank goodness. At least that is one thing we can control.
TeresaBenedicta
I just checked airfare on a route that I've taken many a times (Portland to Baltimore) and the rates are out the roof!! I can usually find round trips for around $350-400, and there's NOTHING in the next two months under $500 round trip. Prices are extremely high right now. I wonder what caused the spike. I thought I noticed gas prices going down. Weird. Now I feel bad- I told the business manager of the place I'm interviewing that round trips weren't too bad and told him what I usually pay.
I expect that the reason why the trips you and I mentioned are so expensive is because the miles are high. Los Angeles is about 3000 sky miles away from our home, so that's a lot of diesel fuel. Little trips like here to Atlanta or to Chicago are actually still cheap. For instance, Jacksonville, FL to Atlanta on Delta, departing next Monday and returning next Friday would cost (as of 2:13 PM EDT) just a few cents shy of $300 (it's a 270 nautical mile trip). Gainesville, FL to Atlanta, same airline, same days, $919 (and no, that's no typo) (300 nm, but 30 nm is nothing as far as airliners go). Ticket pricing is quite a complex science.
Nah, I don't think it's necessarily the miles. I've been making this trip multiple times a year for the past four years. And I've never seen prices this high before. I usually pay an average of $350 round trip for a cross country flight. I've even paid lower than that on occasion. Rarely is it higher than that.
