Chamomile
I don't know if this has been posted recently, but for those wondering why a woman can't be a priest, listen to this lecture by Peter Kreeft: Women & the Priesthood
Norseman82
Afaik most of them trace their 'ordinations' somehow back to the Danube Seven. Basically, a wayward bishop tried to ordain a group of seven women on a boat in the middle of the Danube (outside of the jurisdiction of local bishops). So-called womenpriests generally try to trace themselves back to the Danube Seven to claim apostolic line.
Except that pouring water or ketchup on a steak and saying "you were born a cow, you are now a fish" does not mean the steak is now a fish. Ed Normile
The only thing that these women has Defied, is reality. They are not priests nor Roman Catholic either. They can play with hosts and wine all day long and all they will ever have is bread & wine. The shame is there are those who will be fooled into celebrating the farce with them and they will be hurt too. ed
AccountDeleted
Ok - please correct me if I'm worng, but I thought only a Bishop could ordain a priest? If so, then this whole thing doesn't work anyway because these women were 'ordained' by other 'priests' not by a Bishop. So they have not only defied Canon law by being ordained as women, and some as married women, but also being ordained by other 'priests' instead of a Bishop. Or are there occasions when one priest can ordain another one? Anyway, it's all irrelevant since the Church has not said that it 'won't' ordain women, but that it 'can't' ordain women. That's pretty clear to me. I don't feel sickened by this. I feel deeply saddened.

cmotherofpirl
They are priests in the same way as someone staying in a garage and pretending to be a car. The Church does not ordain priestesses. not now. not ever.

MithLuin
Yeah, there's nothing particularly Catholic about what happened. As the SSPX knew all too well, you can't have new priests if you don't have a bishop. So, a priest can't just ordain another priest. If a bishop were to 'ordain' a woman as a bishop, that might look like it would work on paper (to have apostolic succession, I mean), but it doesn't actually work at all, so....even if you were to follow all the other rules, ignoring the 'men only' rule invalidates everything. I mean, it's not like the event was even held in a Catholic church - it was a UCC building. So, no, having an excommunicated woman lay hands on you does not make you a Catholic priest (regardless of who you are). But yes, these women have been automatically excommunicated, and the two who gave their names to NPR might find themselves formally excommunicated as well, should their bishops find out about it. ETA: It is disheartening that this happened right down the street from me, but...I will say that Catonsville has a wonderful Catholic community with several faithful orders of women religious right there (including Little Sisters of the Poor and the Nashville Dominicans, but I think there are maybe 3 other groups as well). Just a reminder that there are plenty of people who don't support the actions of this fringe group. Edited June 13, 2011 by MithLuin
CatherineM
One of the things that I read about them is that they do "mass" twice a month. Real priests have to say mass every day.
